is violent, action-adventure-oriented, and/or philosophical

kicks as much ass as Death Note, Berserk, Akira, Ghost in The Shell, Ergo Proxy, Rurouni Kenshin, and Samurai Champloo.

thanks much,
Ubel Blatt, Battle Angel Alita (and the followup Last Order)... Oh, and Gantz.

(Should be noted that I'm somewhat cheating and naming manga here. I know Gantz has gotten picked up and that BAA has only a fraction available as an OVA. Ubel Blatt AFAIK has not been animated at all. It does have a lot in common with Berserk tho so it is usually entertaining.)

well i wasn't expecting Death Note to be a Derridian deconstructionist critique of Kantian values, but morality was a constant theme in the series, so there was at least that. his descent into madness and corruption was fun to watch, as was his death god sidekick. and L, of course. i only watched the second season to see how it ended-- the copycat girl is the epitome of everything i hate in anime. second season aside, this type of thing interests me more than, say, how powerful a teenager can be if he believes in himself and never gives up!!! lol.

now, if Emo Note's philosophy is weak, what would be a better example?

thanks Marginal, will check those out too.

did anobody like Noein?

I just bought the entire DVD collection of "Air" and I cant wait to watch it. I also bought both published versions of the movie cuz I didn't know what the difference between the two was... Gosh golly, I'm such a consumer whore. ^.^;

The only anime I've seen that stood up (actually, it improved) with repeat viewings and showed any kind of depth was FLCL. Not the kind of thing that tries to make you think, but there's something there, under the surface, if you want to find it.

Everything else either tries to hard or doesn't try at all. The latter method is preferable.
