well ya it's freaking FLCL. And what's wrong with yuri? yuri is just a genre and it's not like there's a million show, new or old that are about it.

@mizu, the Air movie is really bad. It's not just different, it's bad.

lol @Ass, it's one of the FEW samurai anime to come out in the last few years, so of course it's gonna be up there. Take out the story portion of your argument and you've got a possible point.

You can't compare shonen to a samurai action movie like you're making a point.

Shonen is a genre that is about a character with hidden powers who slowly builds himself into a badass by collecting mystical objects or performing quests or whatever. That's what shonen is, so pointing out that One Piece has that as the main theme is kind of redundant because we all know that -- it's shonen!

This is like comparing Yojimbo with GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra and saying that the latter didn't have the same amazing directing, acting, and setting as the former, while on the other hand, Yojimbo doesn't have very good special effects (IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE COLOUR!) or epic set piece battles under that polar ice caps. It's an utterly pointless and facile comparison.

Besides, from all I've heard One Piece is probably the best shonen manga/anime running right now.

That said, Sword of the Stranger was a fine action movie, but not because of the story, which was kind of retarded, or the characters, who were kind of obvious. Good animation and nice action scenes were the reason to watch it.

that's the stereotypical type of shonen series anyway. for example, some shonen series focus on comedy rather than fighting. shonen just means that the target audience is teens.

More specifically, young teen boys. And you'd be hard pressed to think of a series that wasn't like that. They can downplay the quest/powerup angle, but it's still about dudes with special powers fighting it out in ever more elaborate ways.

And it's true that it doesn't have to be like that, but One Piece is a Shonen Jump series, so you can pretty much tell what the general deal is from that alone.
