Lightening Returns Final Fantasy XIII

Which is why you've gotta be kinda coocoo my friend. There doesn't need to be JOBS for the battle system to play similarly. You're focusing too much on labels.

Lightning is one of the most blatant and shameless examples of an author's pet I've ever seen in a professional work of fiction.

She's literally a Cloud palette swap, minus anything that made Cloud human or likeable and plus everything that made Squall an irritating little shit. She's rude, she's surly, she's hostile to everyone, and she's really, really selfish; while she was tag-teaming with Hope he outright admits that he wants to kill Snow and needs her help so he'll be strong enough to do it, and she basically just goes along with it while dragging him to go blow up Eden. She's directly corrupting this angry, stupid kid by encouraging him to murder her sister's fiancee, just because she needs a competent partner for her suicide mission. Also in the beginning of the game she tries to leave Sazh all by himself on an extension bridge in the middle of a fucking warzone. What an asshole.

This wouldn't be a problem if the character development in this game made any fucking sense, but instead we get WE'RE JUST PETS and like one other scene where all of her problems are fixed and she becomes "a good person." She doesn't ever actually redeem herself to the audience in any way, the story just tells them "oh, she's not an asshole anymore, take our word for it!" We're supposed to stop hating her after that point, but since she never does anything to warrant that we fucking don't.

It just gets fucking ridiculous in the sequels, where now she's a super-awesome flying Valkyrie and SHE FIGHTS PURPLE SEPHIROTH ALL DAY IN HEAVEN HNNNNNNNNGH GOD THIS IS THE BEST FANFICTION I'VE EVER WRITTEN

Toriyama's behavior for interviews and press releases is just fucking shameful. He's like Japanese fucking Chris Chan.

I could not have seen any of that more differently than you did, dragon man.

Selfish? The whole reason she winds up in any trouble, becomes a fugitive and sets off on her adventure at all is that she's trying to save her sister. You are literally wrong from the very start.
