E3 2009

I seem to be running behind here, would anyone mind linking me to the press conferences so that I can join in knowing what I'm taking about?

I've watched a bunch of bits and pieces but I'd like to see the things run all the way through. I've also read every post in the thread from start to finish but I don't always know what's being referenced and tracking down pieces doesn't seem to be culminating in the complete picture.

I've heard a lot of complaints in watching trailers about Team Ninja's take on Metroid and Kojima's take on Castlevainia. These hardcore fanboys disappoint me and I'm not really sure what they want and I can't speak definitively until I know more but the biggest complaints seem to be "This isn't the way series x should be! WAAA!" "Metroid is a first person shooter waaa!" (it was a third person action game once actually) "Castlevania is 2d! waaa" (It's been 3d before) I wish they'ed wait before panning these new iterations for being unfamiliar. Cross pollination of ideas can be a beautiful thing and my hopes are high.

Milo was impressive. And scary. I can see this leading to some strange emotional attachments for people. And some odd headlines. Like "Man kills wife for deleting virtual friend". At least if it all works the way it's supposed to. If it accomplished anything I was instantly insanely jealous of anyone is the game's industry and lionhead specifically while I watched it. It's an exciting innovation. If it works.

I asked about DLC: no
~

That's a shame because unlike outfits it would rekindle some genuine interest in SCIV and I am absolutely loving the look of this Dampiere guy. Makes me wanna kick some ass and eat some Pringles. And I also see that some new levels have been introduced. Again a shame no DLC as interesting arenas are one thing Vanillia SCIV was lacking in. The game looks simply beautiful still which is impressive on a hand held system no less. Even Kratos, a character who's "spirit" I could never really get into looks pretty interesting here. I know since the fanboys wanted the big K from day one they have to be pretty excited.

one thing i heard about milo through Ign is that its set on a certain path. by that i mean you have to ask it specific questions and in a certain way for it to respond the way it does in the video. otherwise it'll lose interest in you and start to do it's own thing.

if you look at it like that, it's really no different than eyepet.

watch the eyepet trailer to see if you can find the similarities that these two programs share. they're presented differently to be sure. but essentially, they're the same thing.

part of this is due to programming. for an AI to respond like John Henry (terminator scc reference), you would need to program so many lines of code that it's presently impossible to do with current technology. though still impressive, it's just another way to present Augmented Reality. People think Natal is different than eyetoy, it's really not. It's just the next evolution in eyetoy technology. something that sony is already beginning to play with.

there are still objectives to accomplish, and you need to ask them in a certain way. it can read body language, inflection and tone of voice. that in itself is impressive. but you can't really have a 1 to 1 conversation with Milo (like it's advertised in the video) again, Milo isn't really that far off from eyepet.

but seeing augmented reality brought home is a very fun thing to see. can't wait to see what the future brings.

Thanks Shinobi.

The 3d Castlevania games tend to be mediocre. That's why the fans are restless.

I spent four days running from a frankengardener and yet I'm not afraid. They're probably not going to get the exploration aspect, if that's their concern.

Thanks for the info man. I had wagered as much actually between the time of my post and now from the fact I'd thought about recording lines of dialogue and the practicality of that actually. It is still interesting and impressive of course but I think the specificness of it's recognition will probably keep a barrier between people and immersion, so perhaps no homicides yet.
