What keeps you watching THAT anime?

I like shonens because I know what to expect. Simple stories with lots of action. It's everything currently in anime that I am getting tired of. So many cliches.

So I have pretty much stopped watching anime, because it's seems that it's under growing me. I am growing older, it's getting younger and stupider. I am not in high school any more.

So very few animes these days interest me. A lot of the cliches TV dramas and movies get away with, anime can't on the simple basis of...anime characters can't act.

try watching anime by abe yoshitoshi. His works are far from cliche and offer a deep story and mostly focuses on a mature audience. Mind-wise not vision like nudity or anything. just things that get so deep that most younger audiences can't get a grasp on. it saved me from what you seem to be going through.

Can you think of any off-hand?

Haibane Renmei if you want something chill but dark at occasions and then inspiration and deep. but it's for a wider audience.

Texhnolyze is like Haibane Renmei but waaaay deeper and much more violent. I found myself really getting into it. plus the philosophical stuff in the anime is really well thought out.

Serial Experiments: Lain is another anime done that hits on the cyber punk/goth atmosphere. it's also very philosophical (i think abe likes that in his stories). it's the most surreal of Abe's anime and often gives people the impression that they were on shrooms or something when watching it. it definitely has a "different atmosphere."

Boogiepop Phantom is probably the more popular of Abe's works. it was also made into a live action movie in Japan. It is also probably the darkest of Abe's anime as well (and Abe's work is pretty dark). it goes from character to character and gives you their side of the story revolving around a certain incident. by the end it all comes together. if there is any confusion after watching the anime then i advise to watch the movie to clear the rest up. the movie gives what the main story of Boogiepop is in a nutshell.

I didn't give away anything because i would like for people to watch Abe's anime and get their own opinion. in range of shortest to longest goes

1) Haibane Renmei
2)Serial Experiments: Lain
3)Boogiepop Phantom
4)Texhnolyze

and favorites in order using above numbers: (I still love them all.)
