most ppl do sport/singing etc casually. If you go hardcore with those it is usually to make money and its a very hard work. Same with gaming - you can't have a full time job if it doesnt pay well. You will have to quit like any normal job.
And skills you earn in videogames will probably not come in handy in other jobs.
Actually any kind of activities that suggest you to be investing a lot of time into it and does not pay anything at the same time atract nerds. b/c this way they can realize themself without true competition activities that do pay involve. But there are exceptions to this rule, of course.
Personally, I dont think its possible to have a family, work and play videogames at competetive level.
