well first off if there's been no JRPG playing for this person then you just give the highly recommended classics first, i'm talking PS1 or before.
Chrono Trigger (OLD SNES game, now on DS and on PS1, still the best there is and revolutionary)
Chrono Cross (PS1, sequel-ish to Trigger, not quite as good but still something else, beautiful music)
Legend of Dragoon (PS1, very linear, however some of the best turn based combat and storytelling there is) (the story itself isn't the best)
Xenogears (PS1, sci-fi.fantasy mix game, revolutionary for it's time for serious story telling and a different gameplay style)
go with the Grandia series, the first on PS1 being the best, and the 3rd on PS2 being OK i guess, this series being fantasy epics to the core. Shadow HEarts series on PS2are great, the first 2 anyway, pretty dark sort of retelling of history.
and theres the deeper "cult classics" like Vagrant Story or the Lunar Series.
but since no JRPG has been played that can leave room open for..... worse things lol.
for PS2 you can play Rogue Galaxy or Arc the Lad and see how you take it, i could go on forever. from WIld Arms to Valkyrie Profile series...... you can go a differnet route and go with the ATLUS company games, a very dark and griddy world to them, Digital Devil Saga, Persona, Shin Megami Tensei - anything
namco.....Xenosaga is a decent SERIES, there are 3 games and if you have never palyed one then the gameplay may be easy to pick up, but the story is so built into itself that you may have issues following it.
Tales of Legendia (a terrible game) and Tales of the Abyss are on PS2 these are just two of the Tales of series on PS2...
i could go on forever for so many differnet games, and I didn't even want to touch strategy games like Disgaea yet, so many of those alone....
