Totally New to Fighting Games

Hello, I'm basically what the title says. I'm totally new to fighting games. I play(ed) a lot of shooters and racing games but shooters nowadays are crap and racing games don't have the replayability that they used to have. Games like Lost Planet 2 and Need For Speed Underground 2 first got me into gaming. After being totally let down by those two genres I decided to start playing RPGs. I enjoy RPGs but I miss the competitive aspect that a good shooter can have. So, I decided to go buy Soul Calibur V for $20.

So far, this game is really fun. The only problem is I suck. Sometimes I feel like I have no clue what I am doing. Right now, I'm trying to learn the basics and trying to learn how to play Tira.

Anyways thanks for reading. I hope to get better at this game with the help of these forums.

That's the joy of fighting games! There's so much you have to learn and know before you get down to really playing, and far more still after that before you can swim with the sharks and eat them (maybe I'll get there myself some day). There aren't any good shortcuts - it takes a lots and lots of practice and experience. Concentrating on learning one character is probably a good way to start. I'd recommend you do lots of arcade mode and gradually increase the difficulty as you learn more moves and how to use your meter (as well as how to predict and facilitate Tira's mood swings).

Hey I'm also new here, but I've been playing a while and Tira is my main. If you really want to get into the deeper side of things once you learn the game, I'd check out her soul arena. It's got all that lovely info for when for you really want to improve your game. For now though I'd go with Lindwurm's word and practice against the bots. It really helps to get used to how to react to her mood swings and learning the enemies' movesets.
