No genius really... they either are playing the game for the first time or are too lazy to go in Training Mode and actually learn their character of choice.
 
The option that the "masher" always chooses might not be the correct one in a lot of situations, but it is the correct one in some. If your opponent keeps choosing rock(attack), then damn the scissors(feinting, etc) and paper them to death...
 
Well, spammers unknowingly attack at a disadvantage which usually gets them killed against experienced players. But, pros still attack out of disadvantage sometimes if they "feel" it-- it's just much more calculated. I guess that kinda relates to the OP. As far as a spammer being some kind of bizarro genius......I don't think so.
 
Not everyone plays in tournaments so you cant expect them to play how you play or think how you think. I do believe there is some genius to being completely random. I have always considered a button masher just an alternate form of a spammer.
