The OFFICIAL Back to school thread!! :D

Question, does anyone know good engineering jobs? I want to be an engineer. Like, I love video games, but don't see myself making them, so the next best job would be an engineer. So yeah, anyone know what types of engineers there are and what high school classes I should take? I was thinking lots of algebra and and physics.

Definitely make sure you gain a good understanding of Algebra in high school. In college you'll be taking calculus and linear algebra, and you'll want to be well grounded in what you leanred in high school Algebra.

It really depends, there are several different branches that do completely different things (and they are all full of awesome). Most engineering fields have a wide range of available jobs, and it will probably continue to be that way for the most part. Civil engineering is extremely saturated, however, and there's a huge amount of competition in the IT field (especially in software engineering). Chemical and aerospace are very interesting, pay well, and have many available jobs, but you're gonna have to get at least a master's if you really want to go anywhere. And of course there's always mechanical, which is the most broad and universal of them all. It really depends on what you want to do. What classes do you like? What's your favorite science?

As for high school, take the most difficult classes available at your school; Not just math and physics but all the other sciences and some humanities too. Not only are the different kinds of engineering some of the most difficult majors out there, but you may also find you have a passion for chemistry or biology or something else. Engineering is a very wide, exciting and rewarding range of careers, but it's also extremely difficult and logic-oriented, so be careful when choosing what you'll do for the next 70 years of your life.

Thanks! This is really helpful. But I'm not sure I want to do cars, or space stuff. I think I'd like to do making computers and stuff like that or maybe an electrical engineer, idk yet. lol But I'll try to do my best at everything, especially math and science and stuff. lol
