Tekken 6 is OUT!!

Well I guess its going to be a love/hate relationship with this game depending on how you feel about the Tekken franchise.

I just picked up the game (PS3 version) at midnight launch here at local Gamestop. Got the swag as well, a Tekken 6 calendar but its not really a calendar in the traditional sense. Just a bunch of 1-sheets with both sides having character CG art and a calendar month printed on it slipped in a gift pack envelope. There is small piece of folded paper inside with the codes for the Elite Samurai pack DLC which includes Yoshimitsu's Cardboard tube samurai costume. You register the code and your email address at the Tekken 6 website and they email you both Xbox Live code and PSN codes. So it seems you can use both for either or but I am not entirely sure. For those of you who will miss this "gift pack", dont worry because that slip of paper does mention that it'll eventually be released to the general public. Its fair guess that all DLC is already on the disc anyways since as we all know how Namco-Bandai is notorious about that.

Needless to say, the first thing you'll do is update the game which fixes some online lag issues. Then you'll want to go into options setting at the main menu and install the game to HDD cuz its real slow loading each level otherwise. Once installed, loading times are comparable to SCIV.

Before the main menu, you'll be greeted with an option to choose a battle position preference (LEFT or RIGHT) - pretty much gives you preferred side of the screen to start from.

At the main menu your options are:
- Scenario Campaign: Basically a single player game mode where you play a story driven action brawler. Think Tekken 4 beat'em up mini game with boss battles. The story cutscenes here are presented with ink-brush art stills but animated (think Flash-animation) along with full CG animation with Japanese voiceovers about the same ol' story about the Mishima Zaibatsu, King of the Iron Fist Tournament and the two new characters. One warning, the cutscenes are long and you can skip them if you want. Even between all the actual fighting gameplay, the cutscenes are still long. In the options menu, you can set it to skip them if you want. For dedicated fans it might be worthwhile to watch it at least onetime through the first play-thru.

- Online Mode: You got Ranked Match, Player Match, Confirm Invitations, Data Upload, Data Download, Leaderboards.
The data sharing is kinda've interesting where it allows you to share replays online (finally) with other players. Another feature is sharing "Ghost" characters. Not only can you download/upload customized characters but you can download their "ghost", a sort've a quasi player-AI-programmed "ghost" or replica character of another player. When you play against a ghost character you're fighting against their fighting styles and tendancies. So say you want to get a taste of how this player on this leaderboard plays, well you can try to fight against his "ghost" and see. How well this works, not sure. Leaderboards are separated into Battle Points (based on region and the whole world), Rank (Overall/per Character), Ranked Match, Scenario Campaign (Single Player story), Time attack(Overall/per Character), and Survival (Overall/per Character).

- Offline Mode: Options are Arcade Battle, Ghost Battle, Vs Battle, Team Battle, Time Attack, Time Attack, Survival, and Practice
Arcade Battle, VS Battle, Time Attack, Survival and Practice is just that. Ghost Battle is a mode where you fight "ghost" characters as explained above. Team Battle is interesting where you can set a team of up to 8 players and have a go against another team of 8 or against the CPU, taking turns eliminating one after the other.

- Gallery: Movie Theater, Prologue, Scenario Campaign Prologue, S.Campaign Cinematics, Replay
Pretty self explanatory. Watch cutscenes here. In Replay you can watch online replay data you saved or downloaded from online battles. A bit disappointed that there is no in-replay camera controls or a way to exploint the in-game camera. So no easy way to make a high quality machinima using Tekken... oh well SCIV all the way

- Profile: Player Settings, Customize, Records, Ranking, Ghost List.
In Player Settings you can choose which default character/stage preference you want to use. Pretty convenient. Customize you can equip characters with a bunch of outfits, accessories, effects to personalize your character(s) of choice by purchasing them with in-game points you earn from campaign/vs/online/etc.. You can also sell back items to regain points. Records and Ranks show your overall stats. Ghost list is a list of all ghost you download.

- Options: Game Options, Sound Options, Controller Setup, Other Options
In Game Options you can adjust difficulty from easy - ultra hard. Default Rounds from 1 to 5. Round Time from 30sec - infinity. Guard Damge on or off. Quick Select on or off. Skip Cinematics on or off. Sound options are the usual stereo/surround, BGM/SE volume, Subtitles. Controller setup allows you to set control config for both the noramal game mode and the scenario campaign mode. Other options you have install/uninstall to HDD (on PS3), Motion Blur on or off for that effect, Display Settings A-C I guess for color balance preferences.

There might be other things in the menu that I may not have mentioned which might have to be unlocked. So not sure if there's more. Oh I forgot to mention, there are no characters to unlock as all 40 characters are available to use at start.

I'm not a real Tekken fan (always a SC fan from the very beginning) although I have been casually following the series since Tekken 3. So I cant make judgement on gameplay mechanics. I still need to play around with the game more so I cant give my overall opinion other than well it's a Tekken game with prettier graphics. (I still think SCIV looks better). The features look promising though, perhaps something Project Soul can look into if we see the next installment of Soul Calibur.

^wow thnx for that skytoast lol so i can share epic battles of me owning sum1? (or more likely getting owned)

@op hasn't it been out in the US for a few days now? And im still w8ing for EU release. Also stop teh hatin

I also got the game at midnight. I like it and the online play is not ass, so I will be sticking with it. It's still not better than Soul Calibur though. So if you like Tekken, go cop it.
