Taki's Replacement Revealed?!

To me the biggest problem of all is Namco having committed to setting the story 17 years later. That was an unbelievably STUPID thing to do.

Why tie to restrictions that are self-made, that failing an embarassing u-turn will lead to [generally] badly recepted changes like replacing Taki.

PS the new character design lacks personality.
I agree with this. They're in a lose/lose situation with that decision. Replace old characters with clones and people will complain their favourite character is gone, remove the characters altogether and people will complain they can't play as those characters, keep those characters in... well, that isn't an option. No way Namco will dare to include any "old" female characters. The limit seems to be 35 or so, and so far they're keeping true to that. We can probably expect many male characters to return though.

I think they should have looked at other games has done, and see what works and what does not work. It's a rather dull business-like thing to do, but it makes sense. I think they had 2 options which have been much better, one really safe and one risky:
-Safe way would be to look at games like SF4, Tekken 5, MK9 and others, and do what those did. Just cater to people's memories of the older popular games and make the new game as close as possible to the most popular one in the series. I guess that would be SC1.

-Do a reboot. And I mean a reboot in a good way. Look at games which has successfully done so (unfortunately, I don't think there's a single one in the fighting game genre). RE4 for instance. It was a giant success despite being vastly different from its predecessors. And its approach is basically reverse of SC5. It kept the same universe and characters, but completely mixed up the gameplay. If Namco wants to revitalize the series (and maybe even the genre), I think that's what they should do. With this current approach we'll get a game which isn't drastically different from SC4, but annoys many fans because their favourite characters are gone for no good reason. It probably won't be a bad game, but I think there's a lot of lost potential.

I like the 17 years later. It lets them shake things up, and seriously the series needed shaking up, especially from a story point of view.

All this character bitching will basically evaporate anyways, its the normal pre-game teaser reveal shock of change complaining. This almost always happens with new games, and then people get used to the changes.

I agree Windie, this will work as it has in another Namco franchise. Look at Tekken 3 compared to Tekken 2. Look how far in the future they went in that game. By doing this they may be opening the doors to new avenues like how Tekken Tag Tournament was born out of the necessity to appease the fans. It's non canon, yet it breathes freshness into the franchise.
