Red Ring of Death!!

Microsoft just started using a new chipset for 360's that supposedly fixes the ring of death issue. The new chipsets started hitting stores sometime late November I think?

Can't remember the details, but there was a story about it on 1up not too long ago.
The new 65 nm chips produce less heat, but the design flaw which warps the mobo when any of its components start to overheat is still there. So yes, the risk of RRoD is still present, even in the latest batch of 360s. There's a fix somewhere that requires you to take off some clamps and resolder certain points on the mobo, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have some experience with computers. I'll look around for the link, nonetheless...

I got RRoD once and have been taking extra care of the replacement, just as I would with a PC... Been keeping it well ventilated, using compressed air to clean dust out of the vents once in a while, and keeping the ambient temps in whatever room I use it in reasonable.

I've owned a 360 for years now, and I've never gotten the red ring problem.

On the other hand my PS3 stopped reading discs recently. >_<

Yeah. The problem is apparently with the clamps putting pressure on the bottom of the board and causing the board to flex. The fix basically reverses the pressure.

I've done it on a friend's 360 that has been having RRoD problems. Seems to be working so far.

Though if I do get a 360 it'd probably be one of the newer ones anyway.

the clamp in question is the "X" clamp on the bottom of the mother board that holds the heat sink in place. There are various people that sell a "X-Clamp" kit that fixes it. Ive bought one and it works temporarily. Takin the xbox apart isnt all that hard to do and replaceing that clamp is fairly simple.

But thats only 1 possible RROD problem. There a several issues that this little white box can have. Mine was refering to the connection to the hard drive. I have had a problem since x-mas day so far. But now Im worried bout my harddrive gettign wiped out. I love my xbox. I dont want a ps3, but I cant afford to keep buying xbox's!!

Dave, if you're in SD theres a guy in chula vista that mods 360s and he can supposedly fix the rrod, not sure if his fix works but 3 of my friends have gotten their 360s modded through him.
