@Mizu, StrikerS has nowhere to go, Geneon had the others and nobody wants to get the rest. Busou Renkin is mediocre, not bad but not good.

Highschool of the Dead is fantastic, D.A.W. has great art in general not just for hawtness. The show is a must watch in my eyes, it doesn't have to be serious to be a good zombie outbreak show.

However, I might make an exception for the anime Angel Beats. I have seen mixed reviews of either its was disappointing or really good (choosing his final relationship maybe?) The art looks really good and the story doesn't sound shabby.

Angel Beats is the only exceptionally good anime since Bakemonogatari, which was the only exceptionally good anime since god knows when.

Of course it shouldn't have to take itself serious to be a good zombie outbreak show. The problem is that it DOES take itself seriously or at least way too seriously than it should. HOTD would be A LOT better if it took the approach Shaun of the Dead did aka dark humor, but it doesn't. They actually try to make you sympathize with the characters when you really have no reason to. Then they cut to more fanservice making it even harder to take the show as serious as it wants you to.

gotta agree with shinobi on this one (highschool of the dead talk)... i'll say the first episode was really good. very good infact... but steadily went down hill... this past episode really irritated me. it's not fun at all to watch...

to add on to this, i'm gettin tired of zombie flicks/shows in general... after watching the trailer for the walking dead... i'm trying to see what's actually different with this show then in others?

but back to HSotD, I just don't care about any of the characters or their plight. i'm rooting for the zombies to kill them, so the show can finally be over... I think i'm done with it..

HOTD, you could say I'm only watching it for the animation. Not just the fanservice, but the smoothness in general...you know, actually animated. I think the episode that introduced the new loli character had a decent plot, but that's kinda besides my point. I wouldn't dismiss HOTD as shit, but pretty animation and a pretty cool soundtrack are the only draws this series has.

As for other series, Angel Beats! is recommendable (it's not too heavy on the romance, and the romance parts that are included feel like they're rushed and forced, but the show is quite entertaining) then maybe Kimi ni Todoke (pretty recent Shoujo romance anime that's just way too cute, also great animation/art direction), and Arakawa Under The Bridge (more comedy than slice-of-life/romance, but it's a good watch, SHAFT humor).
