Nier - She has a what? :O

[10] Knight
Pretty sure you all at least heard the name. If you haven't or more than likely forgotten, then I'll remind you.

Nier is the new game by Cavia (even though their logo is no where found on the case of the game. All you see is SQUARE ENIX, who simply published it). Cavia are the sick fucks that brought you the PS2 Drakengard series (decent story, terrible gameplay).

Apparently, Nier is actually a sequel to the first PS2 Drakengard game. While they did make a Drakengard 2 for PS2, that game was the sequel that corresponded with Ending A of Drakengard. Nier, is the sequel corresponding to Ending E of Drakengard.

Anyway, I randomly decided to rent this game from my job and play it because I had no idea what this game was about outside of a few random Kotaku articles.

Basically, everything about this game, EXCEPT for the gameplay and graphics, are awesome and that really pisses me off because of how much I like it's other factors. The story, the characters, and the music are all really neat. Unfortunately, the gameplay hinders you from truly enjoying it as much as you really should. It's like they were better off making this into an animation rather than a game if they were going to bullshit the one most important factor in a GAME (gameplay). I can live with the subpar graphics. Unfortunately for me, I enjoy the characters and story enough to trial through the game (and there aren't any let's plays of the full game on youtube yet so I can't just watch it). Besides, it wasn't like I spent any money to play this game anyway ($60? lol WTF no).

The game screams low budget. Them selling it for full retail price is bullshit.

As for a rundown on why the gameplay sucks, it's mindless. It's basically Kingdom Hearts without the sparkles and Disney characters. You mash your attack buttons and you win, what the hell is skill? I will say some of the boss battles are neat, but they are very few and far between the mindless mashing you do against normal enemies.

Also, the extras of the game are better off not being there at all. The fishing mechanic in the game is terrible and you'll never want to do it again after the first time they FORCE you to. Farming is tedious and requires you to fool around with your gaming console's internal clock if you want immediate results (shit goes off REAL time). All side quests are either fetch quests with a shit ton of back tracking or button mashing sessions (killing random easy mode enemies).

The only good aspect about the gameplay I'd say are the spells you get as you level up as they get cooler and cooler. However, it doesn't really matter because mashing works just as well as long as your equipment is up to date. There really isn't any warrant to do anything other than mash during normal battles and since there are so many of them, it drags the game's freshness down A LOT.

But with all that aside, I really like the story and characters. I also LOVE the music of this game. I just makes me mad that the gameplay prevents me from truly liking it as much as I want to. So I have a love hate relationship with this game.

TL;DR Version: Nier's gameplay and graphics suck. Everything else is awesome. It should have been an animation, not a game.

PS: I'm officially "CY" for Kaine. Chick might have a dick, but god damnit I don't care. Just stick it in her pooper.

I want Nier Replicant. Why is it that everyone thinks the west wants some macho meathead as a protagonist?

Nier Replicant doesn't change anything about how bad this game's gameplay is. All Nier Replicant does is provide yet another typical looking JRPG main character and a brother-sister bond plot device we've all seen Japan drive into the ground from it's overuse in anime and their games.

Nier Gestalt isn't about being a "macho meathead". It's about being a father who's trying to save his daughter. Frankly, I'm more fond of the father-daughter bond because it provides a decent parental figure as the main character, which breaks the typical trend of JRPG main characters.

Real Talk: The people who whine about not getting Nier Replicant don't realize how stupid and shallow they are making themselves sound because they don't acknowledge the actual character himself. They only acknowledge the way he looks. If you want pretty characters to look at all day, just buy Final Fantasy XIII.

That isn't true. I could care less about a father daughter relationship, because I am not a parent. I do have siblings though, and could relate to a brother sister a heck of a lot better. Shinobi there is an article somewhere ( I can't remember the site), but SE admits to changing the protagonist for the western audience. They specifically said it was to make a more gruff looking older guy that they thought would appeal to the western audience. I'm kind of at a lose of how square came up with that since it is a complete contradiction to their most popular characters in america.
