Introductions to the 8WAYRUN

The_Weasel

[08] Mercenary
Hello. The Name's The_Weasel and I've been a fan of the SoulCalibur series (And of Fighting Games in general) since the days of Soul Calibur II. I had taken a break from competitive videogaming, but I've recently started playing SoulCalibur V and have been having some unexpected difficulties learning the finer points of the new game system IE Just Guarding and Extended Combos seem beyond my reach at the moment... It's not as though I don't understand what they are and how they work; I just seem to lack the skills needed to consistently perform them in the heat of a match.

As my signature suggests, I currently main Astaroth, though I'd like to learn how to proficiently use Natsu, Patroklos, Algol & Dampierre, if only for laughs and "Absolute Trolling" purposes when playing online. (I also a play a little Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for those that are interested, but I'm nowhere near as good as could be in that game...)

I do not have a PSN account yet (As my internet service provider has a VERY harsh bandwidth cap that makes online gaming more-or-less impossible), but I plan to upload pictures of some of my Create-a-Soul characters fairly soon...

Hey, welcome to 8WR. Your status said something about wanting to step up your CAS game, so allow me to make some suggestions:
1) The Link Thread has lots of useful resources, especially the Tips and Tricks Thread. Go into Creation mode and run through every tip and trick outlined in all 9 (currently) pages of that thread.
2) Look at other peoples' work. The challenges archived in the Link Thread are excellent places to start, then check out the personal threads of anyone whose work you found interesting. Pay attention to detail and methods. Really try to figure out how the creator did what s/he did.

Regarding JG and combos, I guess all there is to it is to just put in time behind the pad/stick, especially in training mode. TV/monitor input lag might play into it, but practice is usually enough. All these aPat JFs I'm supposed to be able to do will back me up on this.

Anyway, can't wait to see your work, and again, welcome to 8WR.

Welcome to the site!
Completely agree with ThePascuzzi, you'll find loads of stuff in that Link Thread. The CaS forum has been pretty quiet recently, so I hope you inject some new life into it with a gallery of your own.

As for gameplay, I'd definitely advise spending some time in your characters' Soul Arenas, where you'll find all you need to know about your mains, and more.
If you're struggling with JG, Drake Aldan made a pretty good guide for it (he's done many other guides too which you may find extremely useful). With JGing, there's a penny, and after enough practice, it will drop. The tricky part is just finding a technique that works for you. As for combos, just keep practising them in training mode, once they're in your muscle memory you won't even have to think about them when executing them.
I just seem to lack the skills needed to consistently perform them

I used to think a similar thing when I was fairly new to the game, but it turns out that I didn't lack the skills. I only lacked the practice. :)

Thanks for the replies everyone! as for the suggestions....

While I've seen quite a bit of the various works through the CaS forums already (As I "lurked" around the boards for a few hours before officially joining and creating this thread), I'm afraid I don't have a working Playstation 3/Xbox 360 of my own to use at the moment; I usually go to a friend's house once a week to have a "Session" where we play SCV (Along with some UMvC3 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 if the mood strikes either of us) for hours on end. As I'm not exactly made of money, I've been scrimping and saving up for a new PS3 to go along with the Collector's Edition of SCV I have sitting on a shelf, unopened... (As the PS3 died the day before my game came via mail!)

I've looked through Astaroth's Soul Arena for a little while (As he is my go-to main character) as well as Dampierre's nd have learned quite a bit just reading about the various combos each character has (As with the smaller movesets in SCV, I can actually picture which move gets used in each part of each combination). I've also watched various tournament videos of the best Astaroth players around (Which is unfortunate, because there doesn't seem to be that many... Plus, the one that made the Top-8 bracket at Evolution 2012 switched to Patroklos near the end of his run), although there isn't nearly as much support for dear old Mr. LeBello...

As for JG's and Combos, I know it's only a matter of practice, practice and more practice to get the hang of doing them, but with my current situation I can't exactly ask my friend to allow me to sit down in practice mode for hours on end on his console...
