In regards to the "main character dies = game over", I call it bullshit because this is Final Fantasy and it breaks the fundamental tradition already established within the franchise that helps define it. In fact, from the videos I've seen, a lot of FF tradition is broken in XIII, granted some of them aren't as important as they don't affect gameplay. The broken tradition in which I'm referring to, DOES affect gameplay and it doesn't help innovate it, so what's the point? The "it makes sense" argument is shut down by the fact that this is Final Fantasy we're talking about. This isn't a brand spanking new franchise that doesn't have prior history and foundations established. And as I said, it adds nothing innovative to the series so why do it other than "just because"?
Granted, with how people claiming the difficulty of the game being lax, I suppose it won't affect people much anyway.
I still don't see your point as valid. because they change up the formula to the gameplay mechanics, you think it's bullshit? main character dying affects gameplay in a negative way? really? by making you want to keep that bastard alive is a bad thing? and here i always thought that keeping the main character alive is a main point for the completion of a video game. damn those game over/continue screens... they got it all wrong! completely and totally! the gall designers have for setting the game to be done when your characters die! MY GOD THEY HAVE SOME NERVE!
Also, what tradition?
more or less every final fantasy has been a stand alone title. there is no connections to prior games aside from naming conventions (cid), items (phonix downs and what not), summons, and in some cases, chocobos. the gameplay itself tends to be different. and with the exception of X. and Vii. and another one got a sequel didn't it, they were all pretty much just stand alone titles?
honestly, the stuff you set up in your list are mostly nit picks on a personal level which depends entirely on the player. it's convenient isn't it? personal preference? the stuff that opinions are made out of! what floats your boat may not float others.. apparently my boat doesn't float on bull shit, i'll stay on the water thank you much.
and it doesn't shoot down the "it makes sense" arguement because it still makes sense to end the game when the main player dies. oh, because it's final fantasy it's exempt from change? don't be an idiot. most FF games are meant to be played as a stand alone title not a continuing saga you should already know this if you're up on gaming history. so if they want to try a different approach, what's wrong with that? what because now the game isn't dependant upon a party you feel it's going to actually make or break the game for you? and it still makes sense that if the main character should die, it's game over. explain to me how does it not?
i'm telling you it makes sense in that conventional gaming, should a main character die, we get to see the game over/continue screen. so they took that idea and applied it to this final fantasy. if it make sense in one game, how does it not make sense in another? and don't give me that established franchis bullshit because every establish franchise makes changes to their gameplay either significant or minimal. not every change made can be nor should be innovative, it could be because they want to change up the formula to get new people into the game, it could be to make it enjoyable for people who may not have enjoyed the franchise before, but the changes are made because they believe it's for the best of the series, that's the direction in which they decided to go, and one thing is always clear, that not everyone enjoys the changes made, and i can respect that; but my god... Main character death = game over really something to bitch or be peeved about? seriously?
in short, i still don't see how you feel your grievance is valid, and as far as i'm concerned, it's not that big of a deal in the first place.
I'm sorry, i just can't bring myself to cosign bullshit. I know it seems like i'm giving you a hard time but please understand where i'm currently seeing your point of view... but here's hoping that with all the bull shit i've surrounded myself in both on the internet and in life, i develop a hard allergy to it so i can legitamately say, "please go away, i'm allergic to bull shit.". In the meanwhile, i just have to say, i just refuse to cosign on some bullshit. of course, i realize that it's a two way street. and you can see my POV as bull shit blah blah blah..
oh the beauty and convenience that is personal preference. if only there was some way to eliminate opinions. but then half the fun of life would be taken away.. because then i wouldn't have the joy of calling you an idiot or another appropriate synonym... oh sarcasm... where would i be without you?
i should make an ode to sarcasm....
oh and GET MY RAGE!!! *shakes fist* (is that what demitri says? can't be sure)
also dude, i understand how you feel. i just don't and can't see it as a valid point for grievance. unless you want to chalk it up to personal preference. then, this arguement becomes null and void. on an entire sidenote: what's his/her face did warn you. beware~~ wooooooooooooooooooooooooo *does shaky ghost dance*
