Final Fantasy XIII

In regards to the "main character dies = game over", I call it bullshit because this is Final Fantasy and it breaks the fundamental tradition already established within the franchise that helps define it. In fact, from the videos I've seen, a lot of FF tradition is broken in XIII, granted some of them aren't as important as they don't affect gameplay. The broken tradition in which I'm referring to, DOES affect gameplay and it doesn't help innovate it, so what's the point? The "it makes sense" argument is shut down by the fact that this is Final Fantasy we're talking about. This isn't a brand spanking new franchise that doesn't have prior history and foundations established. And as I said, it adds nothing innovative to the series so why do it other than "just because"?

Granted, with how people claiming the difficulty of the game being lax, I suppose it won't affect people much anyway.

I still don't see your point as valid. because they change up the formula to the gameplay mechanics, you think it's bullshit? main character dying affects gameplay in a negative way? really? by making you want to keep that bastard alive is a bad thing? and here i always thought that keeping the main character alive is a main point for the completion of a video game. damn those game over/continue screens... they got it all wrong! completely and totally! the gall designers have for setting the game to be done when your characters die! MY GOD THEY HAVE SOME NERVE!

Also, what tradition?
more or less every final fantasy has been a stand alone title. there is no connections to prior games aside from naming conventions (cid), items (phonix downs and what not), summons, and in some cases, chocobos. the gameplay itself tends to be different. and with the exception of X. and Vii. and another one got a sequel didn't it, they were all pretty much just stand alone titles?
honestly, the stuff you set up in your list are mostly nit picks on a personal level which depends entirely on the player. it's convenient isn't it? personal preference? the stuff that opinions are made out of! what floats your boat may not float others.. apparently my boat doesn't float on bull shit, i'll stay on the water thank you much.

and it doesn't shoot down the "it makes sense" arguement because it still makes sense to end the game when the main player dies. oh, because it's final fantasy it's exempt from change? don't be an idiot. most FF games are meant to be played as a stand alone title not a continuing saga you should already know this if you're up on gaming history. so if they want to try a different approach, what's wrong with that? what because now the game isn't dependant upon a party you feel it's going to actually make or break the game for you? and it still makes sense that if the main character should die, it's game over. explain to me how does it not?

i'm telling you it makes sense in that conventional gaming, should a main character die, we get to see the game over/continue screen. so they took that idea and applied it to this final fantasy. if it make sense in one game, how does it not make sense in another? and don't give me that established franchis bullshit because every establish franchise makes changes to their gameplay either significant or minimal. not every change made can be nor should be innovative, it could be because they want to change up the formula to get new people into the game, it could be to make it enjoyable for people who may not have enjoyed the franchise before, but the changes are made because they believe it's for the best of the series, that's the direction in which they decided to go, and one thing is always clear, that not everyone enjoys the changes made, and i can respect that; but my god... Main character death = game over really something to bitch or be peeved about? seriously?

in short, i still don't see how you feel your grievance is valid, and as far as i'm concerned, it's not that big of a deal in the first place.

I'm sorry, i just can't bring myself to cosign bullshit. I know it seems like i'm giving you a hard time but please understand where i'm currently seeing your point of view... but here's hoping that with all the bull shit i've surrounded myself in both on the internet and in life, i develop a hard allergy to it so i can legitamately say, "please go away, i'm allergic to bull shit.". In the meanwhile, i just have to say, i just refuse to cosign on some bullshit. of course, i realize that it's a two way street. and you can see my POV as bull shit blah blah blah..

oh the beauty and convenience that is personal preference. if only there was some way to eliminate opinions. but then half the fun of life would be taken away.. because then i wouldn't have the joy of calling you an idiot or another appropriate synonym... oh sarcasm... where would i be without you?

i should make an ode to sarcasm....

oh and GET MY RAGE!!! *shakes fist* (is that what demitri says? can't be sure)

also dude, i understand how you feel. i just don't and can't see it as a valid point for grievance. unless you want to chalk it up to personal preference. then, this arguement becomes null and void. on an entire sidenote: what's his/her face did warn you. beware~~ wooooooooooooooooooooooooo *does shaky ghost dance*

lightning is hot.

which automatically means Cloud is hot. Go figure.

S-U you still can't judge a game til you PLAY IT, a stream doesn't mean much til you're experiencing it yourself (now that doesn't mean nothing is wrong with it and nothing is noticeable without playing, just saying)

And any change at all for and from this game from past to future doesn't matter. There are very few "fundamentals" of FF and i'm sure plenty of people will say different things anyway so it doesn't matter especially in a series that has nothing to do with each other each and every time a new one comes out.

ANY gameplay change of any kind aside from literally stealing from somewhere else doesn't matter, it's a gameplay change oh nooooo. So what if your main character dies and it's Game Over? That just means you need to think a little more. and to counter that i'm sure, is the healed up after battles portion, who cares? The battle system changes, the magic system changes, how it looks how it's laid out and how you move all changes for almost every game. No leveling doesn't matter since FFX did the same thing, and an FF game taking a basic mechanic from another FF game isn't the most shocking thing in the world. I mean even the "complainable length" of each battle in the game only matter depending on if you like the battle system or not. I mean for this if you don't like overly cinematic camera angles and explosions then you're probably screwed.

The summons in these games change their look and how you use them for every game, so it's only personal preference if you think any or all the summons in this game look, sound or act stupid. Ya if I remember they said a while back all the summons were "vehicles' on one sense or another.

No towns doesn't really matter, buying shit from ebay doesn't matter, not being able to avoid enemies doesn't matter, not being able to run away doesn't matter. I mean if you're healed, fight the next round of baddies, if you're in a rush you shouldn't be playing an RPG (especially a JRPG, i mean eww)

The cinematics don't really mean anything either. we all know Square tries their hardest to make the movies over the games, and they're always fantastic looking at the least. The length of the scenes aren't that bad since Xenosaga and MGS4 exist. The story being linear is again not shocking, most FFs are, most JRPGs in general are and hell Legend of Dragoon is one of the most linear RPGs out there and it's fantastic for it's time.
I mean cmon, any heroic tale of anything is going to be a replay of something else from before, you can't focus SO HARD on that for any game/movie/show. Now that we've come to a point in the world where so much crap has been done the most you can do sometimes when you're stuck with a literal A to B story is make the path from A to B look or feel as creative or fun as you can, even if A and B are the same in the end.
(now that isn't an excuse to not try, you can't just say you like some story and you want to remake it)

But point is these "issues" aren't all issues, and have existed for longer than this game and the real main reason it's coming up so hard now is that they made you wait so damn long for it.

Hell i heard someone complain that they didn't like the main characters because they were already badass. Not that they WERE but you met them when they already were. Meaning she didn't like them because they weren't more or less ordinary before getting shoved into the epic role, they were already in the epic role.......cmon

Now I don't agree or disagree with anything stated before me, i'm just saying it's been made too big a deal of. (I haven't gotten my hands on my own full version of it either) Now I haven't heard any real game mechanic problems for this game yet has anyone else? like glitches, easy mode set ups that make it worse, anything?

Whether or not the games are close to being carbon copies of one another doesn't change the fact that Final Fantasy is a franchise and there are aspects in each game to hold the series of games together as such. Each new game is not a brand new game. Each new game is a brand new Final Fantasy game. There will always be things you expect in a new Final Fantasy game (regardless how different the immediate story or battle system is) because it's a franchise. Those things you expect are the foundations established in every other game before the new one (such as summons creatures, items, chocobo in some fashion, etc). Some of them were broken, mainly the ones people seem to overlook (ie being able to command your entire party and the main hero being able to be revived after having fallen).

If you want me to be honest, it sounds like Square finally took a look at a MegaTen game and made a bastardized version of some of it's mechanics and slapped the FF motif on it.

would you like the "Wah-Wah", the sad face with the pinky used to symbolize the tear drop, the "too bad, so sad", or the three hit combo of all them together?

yeah, i'm being a deuche. let me stop. but for real though, like i said, if that's what floats your boat, you're welcome to be upset. just don't expect me to sympathize because that one thing is not a game changer son. it's not. Also that team thing you described wasn't limited to just Final Fantasy... if i recall correctly other JRPG's have that as well. it's not that big a deal. no need to blow it up.

but i guess.....

haters are gonna hate. (^ ^)V

you still cool in my book shinobi. even if i may be an ass/jerk/ and all that jazz in yours. you'll be alright.
