Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate

So I had a Gamestop gift card that I was going to hold on to forever and ever. There's nothing really too interesting on the horizon for me. So I noticed DoA5 was $20, so I decided to give it a try.

I haven't actually played people yet. I was sort of blind sided by the online pass thing. I'm more likely to play people in my area than jumping into online, but I do want to have some basics before I throw myself into that.

Welcome to DOA, enjoy your stay in Paradise!

Strings feel like they come out faster than most 2D jab pressure

Not really, 2D fighters have faster pokes but DOA's strings are much smoother.

What are my basics?

These vary per character. Analyze PP, 2P, 6P, 6K, 1P, holds and throws for most characters. DOA uses a Triangle System: Strikes > Throws, Throws > Holds, Holds > Strikes. Prioritize the correct attack for Hi-counter +50% damage. Work in Guard Breaks or Offensive Holds (when available) when you can.

I feel like zoning / good spacing isn't a thing, or it's very subtle

Zoning definitely matters just like every other fighting game. Try out Ayane, Hitomi, Jann Lee or La Mariposa to see what I mean. Their success depends on good spacing. Analyze the range of various pokes.

How do the characters actually vary (lol)?

By a fair amount, but there are consistencies amongst the characters. All characters have counter holds except ALPHA-152 & Pai Chan, who instead only get parries or a variation on it. Characters are generally categorized into categories such as Grapplers (Bass, Tina, Bayman, Lisa), Pseudo-Grappler-Strikers (Mila, Hayabusa, LeiFang) or Strikers (pretty much everyone else...). Then you have characters like Brad Wong or ALPHA-152, along with the VF characters whom tend to play fairly differently to most characters. Try the cast out for yourself!

How does wake up work?

Okizeme in DOA works along these lines:

Options for Defender
- Mid Wake-up Kick
- Low Wake-up Kick
- Special Wake-up attack (Ayane's looks pretty cool!)
- Side, Forward or Back Ukemi
- Lie down and do nothing

Options for Attacker
- Downed Attack
- Jumping Downed Attack
- Ground hit
- Forced Tech
- Low Crush Attack
- Priority Attack over Wake-up kick
- Back Feint Attack to avoid Wake-up Kick
- Back off and reset the situation while you're controlling space
- Hold or Block Wake-up Kick

If you get knocked down try to ukemi unless you know the opponent likes to whiff attacks over your body then use a Wake-up attack. If you score a knockdown, the optimal course of action is to initiate a Forced Tech by striking the opponent before they can act or get up allowing you to maintain offensive pressure. But pay attention to the other options for dealing with downed opponents.

How do I fuck someone's day on wake up?

If you're the aggressor, whiff a quick poke then do a low counter hold ;). If you're on the ground, vary the timings and height of your Wake-up attacks. TBH, the wake-up game is a huge series of 50/50s. Forced Techs are the only way to reliably prevent a downed opponent from attacking you back. Also, you're a bad man if you want to fuck someone's day up after beating them down to the ground.

How do I keep my day from getting fucked when I wake up?

Read your opponent and don't get predictable. You can also Ukemi whenever you get an opportunity or don't get knocked down in the first place =P. For the other side of fence, PUNISH WAKE-UP KICKS WHEN POSSIBLE!

Why are there 1 million throws per character?

Only the Grapplers have about "1 million throws". Strikers only have a couple throws for every situation usually. Throws are the primary form of Block punishment and Hold punishment (remember the Triangle system?). If you score a throw on whiffed hold attempt, the victim takes 50% MORE damage than a standard throw. Grapplers rely on throws for victory. Try winning a match with Tina or Bass without scoring a single grapple attack. It's like using Ayane without kicks. Naturally throws are very important to DOA's combat mechanics.

Does side step actually evade attacks?

Yes, but only the first attack in a string. Any follow-up attacks in a string will retrack. In that case, always use a side-step attack as opposed to an empty sidestep. Also take note of attacks with Tracking capabilities such as Ayane's 3H+K.

If you have any other questions seek out an Emperor Cow or a Mr. Wah. Enjoy the game!

I do actually. I've only just started getting rid of collectors editions because I have no room. Sometimes I give away the game and keep the goodies.
