Welcome newcomer. All you really need to do in order to play effectively with soul calibur is just play it.

Soul Calibur achieves something no other fighting game can: Being both easy to pick up, but deep in it's own right. Watch some vids for the character you wanna play, try everybody and see who you like. Then get into the technical stuff later. One step at a time my friend.

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys (& girl(s)!). I'm really looking forward to jumping in at the ground level for this game...I really enjoy learning, as lame as that may sound. I'm going to be at Winter Brawl for Street Fighter, but I'm still trying to decide whether or not I should enter for Soul Calibur. I suppose it would be more helpful to just watch lots of matches?
