A few questions about Soul Calibur V

Hi I'm brand spanking new to this forum, so I'm still figuring out how things work.

I'm somewhat new to the game. This game brings out a strong passion within me and I want to make this game a hobby of mine. I am hoping a seasoned SC gamer can help me. Here are my questions.

1. Who is a good character to start with?

- I noticed some characters have more ease of use than others. Does it matter?

2. Is the game considered a balanced game? Which of these three scenarios suit SCV the most?

- Let's say two experts of the game with the same skill chose their favorite character. It doesn't matter who versus who. Would the outcome of the fight be determined based on who attacked and defended correctly?

- Or are some characters considered "counter" characters that can just beat up another character with little to no effort?

- Or are some characters just better than others?

3. Lastly, can you defend yourself against a spammer, or are they difficult to beat?

In addition, I currently have a very slow internet. I should have adequate internet speed within the next month or so. My goal is to eventually become adept or better with every single character. So if you'd like...

If you play on PlayStation 3 and would like to train/spar/go over some tactics and ideas with me, please leave your PSN account name here or send me a message. I will add you when I have faster internet. While I'm waiting to get that, I'll be practicing.

(As a side note, I do not play for competition. I'm not interested in tournaments or clan battles. My goal of the game is to just get better and help others when I feel I have learned enough to do that.)

Thank you.

I'm somewhat new to the game. This game brings out a strong passion within me and I want to make this game a hobby of mine. I am hoping a seasoned SC gamer can help me. Here are my questions.

1. Who is a good character to start with?
-Mitsurugi and Pyrrha.
- I noticed some characters have more ease of use than others. Does it matter?
-Ignore those "stats"
2. Is the game considered a balanced game? Which of these three scenarios suit SCV the most?
-Depends on who you ask about balance.
- Let's say two experts of the game with the same skill chose their favorite character. It doesn't matter who versus who. Would the outcome of the fight be determined based on who attacked and defended correctly?
-Just like high level fighting in every ever other fighting game if you don't do things correctly you'll pay for it.
- Or are some characters considered "counter" characters that can just beat up another character with little to no effort?
-Yes, that's why match up charts exist. Example: Zwei vs Cervantes. It's heavily in Cervantes' favor.
- Or are some characters just better than others?
-Yes also. In just about every fighting game there are always a few characters that are a few steps above the rest. Viola is an example of that in SCV.
3. Lastly, can you defend yourself against a spammer, or are they difficult to beat?
-It's extremely easy to beat a spammer once you know the ways around that move they're doing repeatedly.
In addition, I currently have a very slow internet. I should have adequate internet speed within the next month or so. My goal is to eventually become adept or better with every single character. So if you'd like...

Hope you have fun with SCV.

Welcome to the site!

1. Who is a good character to start with?

To a new player this matters a little bit. Basically "ease of use" is a combination of how hard the combos are and how many complex set ups that character has. It doesn't mean how good the character actually is.

2. Is the game considered a balanced game? Which of these three scenarios suit SCV the most?

- Let's say two experts of the game with the same skill chose their favorite character. It doesn't matter who versus who. Would the outcome of the fight be determined based on who attacked and defended correctly?

Yes, and option one. However, it is debatable that Viola makes the game unbalanced and that ZWEI can't win.
3. Lastly, can you defend yourself against a spammer, or are they difficult to beat?
Depends on which character you play, but majority of strategies are difficult if the opponent knows what they are doing.

My PSN is "SronkoStrategist" Add me for games! :3 Im on PSN

As for the" which character is best to start with question": It really depends on your playstyle. And then you can find the one where that type of play comes easiest.

Ease is use is really subjective, in my opinion. A lot of characters have intricate mechanics such as just frames or stances with different moves that come out. There can be seen as "difficult" things but they can be mastered in training mode. :3 The real difficulty comes in the application of your characters playstyle.

-If you like close range rushdown and lots of advantage on hits, try Patroklos or Ezio
-If you like "vortex" characters, that is close range rushdown followed by hard to escape 50/50s, try Yoshimitsu
-If you would rather look for punishes and have safe pressure, try Pyrrha.
-If you like movement and spacing, try Nightmare
-If you like pushing damaging 50/50s from medium-long range, try Mitsurugi
-If you like a lot of stance/string based play, try Maxi

In SCV, at least in my opinion if its worth anything, there can be "tiers" of characters. Viola and a-Pat are generally seen as stronger characters than Raphael and ZWEI, for example. However this is the case in any fighting game. There are good characters and then there are good players. The character does not define the skill of the player. Matchup knowledge, good reads and tight play will decide the winner, not their choice of character.

There are simple ways to beat a spammer. People who don't play this series like calling it a button masher, there are easy ways to counteract people who just wont stop hitting buttons. If they are spamming the same move, read it and punish appropriately, if they are mashing buttons, fish for counter hits on wakeup, for example.

Enjoy the game, its super fun. :3

Lately I've been playing as Mitsurugi. I've noticed he does some good damage but I'm at a disadvantage when it comes to faster swinging enemies and those who have extremely long range attacks.

I haven't really seen Viola as a threat (but I haven't been playing online either)

The hardest enemy I've faced is probably Xiba. He is much faster than he looks and hardly has any openings. =P
