The RPG Appreciation Thread

Not gonna lie, I'm a Final Fantasy junkie with my favorites being FF8, FF9 and FF7 in that order. I like the Dissidia FF games on the PSP too.

My ABSOLUTE favorite RPG so far though is Star Ocean till the end of Time. The gameplay was sooooooooo much fun imo. Star Ocean the Last Hope was fun too, but I like till the end of time a bit more.

Fire Emblem is close to being my sec fav series even though I only played Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. I replay those games way too much I swear. I also really like Valkyrie Profile 2.

Well no, i mean it literally isn't. You couldn't role play with out a story....... No matter how minute the story is.
But you can. All you need is a character and a world for them to interact with. I'm perfectly content experiencing the game's world through exploration and dialogue instead of having a canned story shoved in my face via cutscenes a la Final Fantasy.

And yet any dialogue that leads to an over-arching experience means there's a story. A story doesn't need to be shoved anywhere in any way, it's just there.
And thus a story is required to truly role play.

The only way there isn't is if you go through a game with literally no talking or communication in any way about how, what or where you're going/doing/did.
Or the dialogue is entirely random and has nothing to do with anything.

All of that would remove it from the RPG genre and would just be Exploration for no reason.
It'd be Minecraft lol
