todays music sucks

I probably know more about music than 95% of you, if for no other reason than just being older than most here, and "today's music" has sucked ever since I was a teenager like the OP. "Today's music" is just another term for whatever is the most accessible (i.e., mainstream) at the time, and like most entertainment it is designed to make the bulk of its money in the first several weeks after release. That's the way it's been for decades, and this model persists even though the industry is in a state of flux ever since the Internet became the way everyone gets everything.

What I find funny is that a lot of the artists people say are better than "today's music" WERE "today's music" at one point. Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, Madonna and a host of others held up as examples of good music in this thread were vilified in their heyday by people who fancied themselves in the know.

Bottom line, music just isn't that important to most people, which is why they're more than content to take what they're given. I accepted that years and years ago. And really, lots of younger folks don't know how good they have it. I felt so fortunate to have the Internet when I was just some prog-metal dork in my teens, and the tools I had back then were worse than primitive compared to what's available now. Shit, I used to have wet dreams about things like Spotify and Grooveshark.

Rock isn't the dominant art form not because it is too "deep" for the masses to understand, but it hasn't evolved very much since its inception. Rap most definitely has. Look at the cookie cutter metal bands out there. Sometimes it is difficult even for someone like me, who loves metal, to discern who is who when it comes to them. Especially with some of the more contemptible sub-genres out there, like Death Core....
Whoa, whoa, whoa....

I'm no rap connoisseur, but I'd say rock as undergone at least as much evolution as rap. And yes, I include metal and its subgenres as examples. Also, rap like pretty much all popular music is based on 12-bar blues, as are rock and metal.

This is said by every generation who doesn't realize that THEY ARE OLD NOW. There were teen idol singers dating back to the 1950's, but for some reason Justin Bieber is the downfall of humanity. There were shit artists dominating the airwaves when we were younger too.

Quoted for Truth. This is a neverending cycle. And this is the reason why there are bars playing exclusively 70's, 80's or 90's music pretty much everywhere.

Ok, I did NOT mean to say "since it's inception," and rather meant "in the most recent years." To say it hasn't change since it appeared is really dumb, I don't know how I didn't notice I wrote that....

And yes, I consider Metal to be a genre under Rock as well.

But can you tell me it has grown leaps and bounds recently? The biggest current wave is the indie movement, which is more or less a combination of Alt Rock and Pop Punk.

I may not be that old, but I know there's always something to replace the old garbage and mainstream music will suck in every generation, because just as Maxi Malmsteen said XD its designed to make the most money it can while it is still popular and when everybody forgets about it it'll get replaced, think about it in the 90's it was the Backstreet boy, N sync, but then people forgot about them, then 2000 there was Justin Timberlake doing solo and some other artists which I can't mention cause I didn't even get the chance to hear about them , but then again people start forgetting about them, here Lady gaga (the new madonna for some people) Justin Bieber, The jonas Brothers just to mention the ones I've heard of since I don't really listen to the radio or watch music channel, but people will forget about them and they'll get replaced

(I will try not to name names in this comment of mine to avoid from arguments or showing more favoritism as I already do XD. Thank you.)

Remember the most important thing about music: it is (like videogames and any form of media) and art form. Art is the expression of self shown through skill AND talent. Most people who make music on the radio now a days make music that they listen to. Ie, music that requires no thought nor feeling. Not to say that there are not those who make lyrical (and non lyrical) gold. However, the most popular and loud tend to be those who complain about nothing, ridiculous atrocities that have no skill nor feeling and just want money, spouts of idiotic slang through trying to sound like the sound of old, and, lets not forget this one, singing like babies. By that I mean making words up mid song and then calling it art.

As I have said, it is unfair to say all modern day music is like this. There is a treasure trove of bands you have never heard of or perhaps even have. There are some popular musicians that are indeed good at what they do and have thought AAAND music that does not sound like garbage scraped off of the back end of a dog. It is up to us, those who listen to music to support them as much as possible. As much as you would hate to hear it, we all need to stop illegally downloading music if this will ever start going over. And those who want to get into music reading this, DO IT! Do something you love, do it with real feeling and I will respect ya enough on that much.

For music that is good that is not as popular, open up your mind more. 6 years ago I tried my hand at metal fusions and other not so known bands, they are great musicians and at the same time plain fun (trying not to name names unless you want me to). It is all about looking for whatever and keeping an open mind about who they are and what they speak about in music. The next john lennon is out their, perhaps he/she is making music now and we are unaware of their music. We just gotta go find them and support them, or make music yourself if you have talent and skill.

I thank you for reading.
