todays music sucks

Really, I Can't say any artist "sucks"., let alone today's artists. Regardless of whether or not the music is to my taste, they can play music and I can't, lol. Unless I take up an instrument and start selling my own shit, I've no right to say anybody else sucks.

That said, a lot of music out there, from the 60s to now, is not to my taste and I generally listen to hard rock and metal.
I hear you on the hard rock and metal thing but today's mainstream music is that a lot of doesn't require you to play music or know how to compose a song or how to write lyrics. most of the time it's done for them by the produces and whatever record company the artist work for. That's why I keep a good distance between me and mainstream with a yard stick in my hand for any that try to sneak it's way to me. I also listen to just about everything as long as it seems it came from the artist heart and has taken more than a couple of hours to produce the whole song.

Sorry Rap genre that pretty disqualifies you.

now... i'm going to show you exactly what I'm talkin about when i say music appreciation...

let me first ask you to listen to this:

Only one thing comes to my mind when I listen to that

I mean it, what the hell? and shadowzone you've got a point but you can't say that this so called song with Crap-z is something neither of us could do, that guy doesn't even have a good voice or sing something that's meaningful, as a matter of fact he's not even singing, to me he's just talking, so I have to say it really sucks

This is said by every generation who doesn't realize that THEY ARE OLD NOW. There were teen idol singers dating back to the 1950's, but for some reason Justin Bieber is the downfall of humanity. There were shit artists dominating the airwaves when we were younger too.

Amaros: The point of Madnis' post was that what Jay-Z accomplished in this song was beyond writing some lyrics to a beat. The two videos posted below the first one show the source of the samples used in the song, and they are NOT simply pasted in. They were clearly found through hard work and research, and would not have been discovered without eclectic tastes and an expansive music library. Additionally, the samples have been tweaked precisely to fit the song and mood. This was done while also writing lyrics around a theme.

Is this song full of guitar solos and complicated drum beats? No. But was it constructed using difficult techniques? Yes. Sampling is just as difficult an art, and in some cases it is much much harder than actually getting people together to play a song you wrote.

And please don't make the mistake of thinking that just because guitar solos and blast beats are hard to do conceptually that they aren't also a subject of scrutiny. Rock isn't the dominant art form not because it is too "deep" for the masses to understand, but it hasn't evolved very much since its inception. Rap most definitely has. Look at the cookie cutter metal bands out there. Sometimes it is difficult even for someone like me, who loves metal, to discern who is who when it comes to them. Especially with some of the more contemptible sub-genres out there, like Death Core....

All I'm saying is don't discount it for not seeming technically proficient. Its the same reason non-musicians think of jazz as not difficult, it's an entire genre of music designed to make superhuman feats seem effortless.

well I know who is who in my library. The best thing to do is to branch out from American music and look to foreign bands and I'm not talking about those Scottish or German bands that still fits into the main core of metal. yes for people who only listen to one particular type of music will have a harder time finding a new band or artist to listen to. now I first really shot down rap when I heard the music from Resident Evil Genesis. it was the resident evil theme made by Marilyn Manson and I thought, "huh, they're playing this over the radio?" then a rapper's voice broke in and I was like F*%K THAT! rappers and some hip hop artist are getting very lazy and uncreative in their music by taking music that's already been made. but even rock is becoming uncreative as well. take Green Day for example. I can practice their songs and master the guitar, my drummer can master the drums, and my bassist (i think) can master the bass parts in one listen through. a lot of artist sounds like someone else. I remember when rap VS. rock thing came out. Rock did something fun with Korn doing Twisted Transistor except for the one stereo type at the end of the video but they had legit rap artist in the video doing the band's part. a rap artist did Party Like a Rock Star which pretty much demoralized rock as a whole by doing every stereo type to make rock look like it's full of juvenile people and actions.
