Actually they are looking whether she has a genetic failure which is called the "androgen insufficiency syndrom"....(well thats the german term)
Those people are born with a X and Y chromosome, so they SHOULD be male. But since they have an insensibilty for testosteron, they dont develop MALE sexual organs, instead of this they have female sexual organs. So actually they are MALE with a vagina :P
In Atlanta 1996 there were 7 (!!) Women who had this failure and were allowed to participate...in 2006 in Asia the indian female athlete Santhi Soundarajan had to give back her 800m silver medal, because she was tested and actually she had X and Y, so from a genetic point of view she is male.
Of course such a test is embarrasing, but it happened a lot of time....
