Why are you good?

All that means is that it's not meaningful unless people agree with a viewpoint. But, such a dynamic can change easily. And if it's all perception, then it's just a game of rationale and persuasion.
 
You're good when people say you are. It doesn't matter what you achieve. It doesn't matter how much skill you think you got...you're only as good as people say you are. It's relative. lol
But that depends on the type of audience. If it's just a circle of friends, online spectators (XBL & PSN) and/or anyone with no experience or lack thereof in tournies & gatherings, then I wouldn't take info from those group of ppl.

I say sum1's ability to adapt as well as having a vast knowledge of characters as well as different play-styles is what makes the player good. Players who place themselves to the top demonstrate such. They are exposed to different characters and play styles from many battles in tournaments and gatherings.
