What is it about video games that attracts...

thread is retarded. video games dont attract/breed nerds. people choose to be a certain way.

gaming has been one of my main activities since i was 5. i can give you the history of gaming from the NES up. i dont have a niche genre that i exclusively play, pretty much open to anything. RPG's, shmups, action adventure, kart racer, puzzle game, its all open.

my knowledge and prowess when it comes to gaming is what most of you in this thread have deemed nerdy, yet if you look at me and what else i do in my free time you would have no clue that i'm that into it.

i'm in a college town, have a wonderful GF, i drink, play pool, party, rock climb, fish, play random sports, watch UFC.

not a nerd, but i will tell you that brownie from contra hard corps on genesis was one broke bastard.
 
So I am in college and I am in one of my lecture halls. There is like at least 250 students in there. The professor asked us, "Who here had ever played a video game?" (Note: Not who here play video games daily) Out of 250 college students that were there, there was like only 15 people that raised there hands.. So I thought to myself... either most of them are lieing because they thought if they raised their hands, people think they would be a nerd/loser or its true... video games are only for nerds/geeks/losers.. So why do kids hide their video game playing from other people? Anyways back to the topic, so do video games create nerds or do the "nerdy" people are the one that gets attracted to video games because it is just more a nerdy thing than normal thing?
 
So I'm a nerd cuz I'm attached to Soul Calibur and take it to a competitive level, while itz okay to be hardcore into certain sports, singing, dancing, and other things that ppl don't consider nerdy?

What ppl consider nerdy is entirely subjective cuz there's no objective reason to label certain things as nerdy.

Let me compare you certain scenarios:

-A gamer focusing on being a good Halo player is playing an important match here. His/her mom interrupts and gives him/her chores. Kid told the mom "not now" but his mom proceeds and turns off the TV. Kid gets mad at his mom and asks to turn back the TV on. Do you think this kid is a nerd? if so continue reading the other scenarios.

-My teacher who is an artist is focusing on a certain artwork. While focusing on that he was interrupted by his wife asking him to do the laundry, but he's like "not now, I'm busy." Imagine how he would feel if his wife were to do the same thing as the kid's mom.

-A boy is working hard for the wheelchair Olympics. His girl friend came in and reminded him that they were suppose to go on a date. He told her that he can't cuz he was so focused on winning the wheelchair Olympics. But the more she argues with him the more frustrated he became. Nuff said you got the idea what will happen.

Sure there are times when ppl need to focus and concentrate just as some of you do for tests and exams, but of course there are other times as kab pointed out when gamers, artists, athletes and other hardcore jockeys spend casually on.

Ppl who label pro gamers as nerds are usually the ones who don't participate or don't participate enough in local gatherings. So my right to enable them as ignorant.

Good points actually haha. Yeah but most of the older people "don't get it" cause video games did not exist when they were growing up, unlike sports etc.
