What are some good anime to watch?

No its not if I wanted to recommend a borderline hentai I would recommend Queens Blade, Ikki Tousen, and especially Aki-Sora. Perhaps I over thought that anime but I saw meaning in the sex despite how ridiculous that sounds I think the sex scenes were done at the right time for the right reason.
 
I thought Mnemosyne was pretty good, though it's not for everybody. It has a dark, gothic, cyberpunk feel to it.

Borderline hentai is like...Kiss x Sis lol

From Animefreaks list, I gotta say, from the ones that have not been mentioned by others yet: Crest of the Stars series, Gunbuster 1, and Macross (Do You Remember Love) stand out.
 
Ga Rei-Zero? Also I don't know if you'd consider Elfen Lied "modern" but it's also set in moonland and some people find it dark. Others find it hilarious/retarded though so your mileage might vary. If you've already seen either then sorry lol.
