I'm not saying where I fall on this, but I must comment on how stupid this is.

Get serious.
Seriously. Florida law was that you had to prove you attempted to flee. They've flip-flopped on the issue a few times now. I believe now it's back to you have to prove reasonable self-defense and do NOT have to prove you attempted to flee. In the case of Zimmerman and Martin, based on Zimmerman's testimony he had reasonable fear for his person and acted within the constraints of the law.
You should check your local laws regarding the issue. You would be surprised at what different States consider murder, self-defense, etc.
Cool Story in the spoiler tag.
While I was still in the area, a man was arrested for shooting a woman. As it turned out, she was standing on his porch with a weapon and was pretty drunk. He left the living room, skipped exiting through the back door (failed to flee), entered his bedroom and retrieved a pistol (with the clear intent to murder her, according to the law). Shot her dead from the front door.
He's in prison for murder. Premeditated murder, I think, but I don't remember.

If you meant the part about the shooting in the extremities bit.... well, I wasn't suggesting you only non-fatally shoot people that are actively trying to kill you. Shootings at the range they say Martin was shot (not point blank but at least a few feet) will generally have injuries other than the fatal shot. Someone attempting to flee might be struck in the upper arms or back. It's a natural reaction to attempt to cover your face with your hands or arms and that defensive position usually ends up with shots to the forearms. People still attempting to attack the armed individual are usually struck in the chest.
