So the open beta for The Secret World started this weekend... (I streamed it for 13 hours straight on Friday). Has anyone else played it? What do you think?
I personally loved it... For me, the game is the exact opposite of TERA.
TERA got combat right. However, at the time time, TERA got everything else wrong. TERA fused in the worst things about western MMOs, the irrelevant storylines and useless and boring quests, with the worst things about eastern MMOs, the need to constantly grind. The combat was awesome, but everything else was a by-the-numbers generic MMO.
TSW here is the exact opposite. The combat is all wrong, but everything else is just done so absolutely right. Storyline is fantastic, and the need to grind is irrelevant. At the same time, they managed to get rid of one of the staples of MMOs: downtime.
Yes the combat is a bit limited in the beta, but that's because they have 70% of the combat abilities and animations locked out of the beta... so chances are it will get better. Not to mention, most reviews of the combat I've seen so far are from how it starts, but like in most games, when you only have 3 or 4 abilities, its going to suck. The combat uses a "token" or "pip" system where you generate a resource on either yourself or targets and you can unload those resources as an attack; and you dont really get the abilities to exploit this system till later.
The game itself is not like your regular MMO, it is instead a Point and Click adventure... online. If you liked The Longest Journey, Broken Sword, Syberia, Monkey Island or other games of similar ilk, you will probably like a game like this. It combines the in-depth and thought provoking puzzle storylines with an online community. As the same time, the "crafting" system is Minecraft... literally.
