The Last of US

While playing a young teenage girl in a killer zombie game would be a rather... ballsy idea. It's highly unlikely that the typical twenty-something gamer would sit well with that idea and marketing would like push the game to playing Joel, the main male character in the video. I suspect there probably will be segments where players will play as Ellie, but I think the predominate character that players will play will be Joel.

Then again, they could easily surprise everyone. Maybe Joel will be some computer controlled AI partner whom you have use and command to kill off those zombie targets in some fashion. Highly unlikely, though.

Well there's a large demographic now of gaming dads. I wouldn't be surprised if that also meant there were some dads who were devs. There might not be a marketing push at all or a desire to appeal to the young male demographic here if Joel is the protagonist. They might be... trying to appeal to paternal instincts? Strange I know but you've supposedly got them crawling around inside of you someplace, waiting to leap out like Wolverine to make you adopt young girls... like... Wolverine? Wow how's that for a simile? A double wolvie.

Anyhow, I'm sure for the dad audience taking care of a young girl and the drama that you can pull from that could be quite the sure-fire punch to the gut.

Agreed. Personally I wouldn't mind playing as either, but I think some gamers might not like the idea of playing a 'frail little girl' like Ellie.

See, I was kind of intrigued in Uncharted 3's little segment where you play as the young Drake. The clumsiness, the unsteady climbing and the perspective all seemed like a really interesting idea that could be taken several steps further and if executed well, could be really fun.

And here, with the Last of Us, you've got a young character who probably couldn't kill the zombies outright (the fact she's got a sniper rifle on the cover art might ruffle a few feathers especially considering how young she is and what she might end up doing) and you'd have to dodge and weave through enemies and let your partner do all the killing might be interesting to say the least. Problem is making it work. The utter sense of helplessness of being unable to kill a target and navigating through the game world such that you'd get your partner to do it would be difficult to execute well. That sense of helplessness needs to not come off as frustrating.

Of course, I'm likely way off and this game is likely going to similar to Uncharted's gameplay, with the possibility of a co-op adventure akin to Resident Evil 5.

What would be the most interesting imo would be playing alternatively the two of them, providing they are very different and complementary characters.

hmm like Joel is strong ( able to destroy things ? doors ? ... ), can handle guns, is tall ( can reach high places )...
Ellie would be small ( being able to crawl through a small air vent for example ), evading efficiently, good at scavenging...

Things like that.
