The Inevitability of Trolling

I guess I should clarify that a little because I think people are missing the point. Lets look at the essence of Teabagging. It's essentially a character moving up and down on the screen. No one is being threatened, no one is being hurt, it's a symbolic gesture.

Right. And flipping the bird is just me raising one of the five fingers on my hand and pointing it at you. No one is being hurt. It's a symbolic gesture. Does that mean I'm going to go do it to a random guy wearing gang colors I pass on the street as a "joke"? Nope.

That's the point of offensive gestures. Nobody is actually being hurt or threatened, so in a way, yeah, it's harmless. But they're supposed to convey distaste, anger, hatred. If someone cuts me off when I'm driving, I flip them off to transmit my feeling of rage towards them - to let them know that they've pissed me off, that I don't like them. If someone ragequits, lagswitches, or tells me they're glad 9/11 happened, I beat the shit out of them and drop my balls on their face. I do that because they're not right in front of me, and I can't verbally assault them. (I'm not really a "punch you in the face" type.)

I don't think people actually perceive any danger...but I think people do feel like they're being flipped off.

EDIT: I'm not saying if I get teabagged, I resort to physical threats, and I'm not saying that's an appropriate response at all. The only time I ever got that incensed over online was the 9/11 guy. His name was AceFrost and I truly hope he burns in hell.

I see taunts as one way to provoke your opponent to lose their cool. However, the way someone plays a character sometimes offends someone to get a hissy fit.

To elucidate, I'm not being a jerk spamming the same move, I'm just exploiting your weakness. Common sense, don't let a boxer know you hate getting hit in the face. Chances are they'll aim straight for that to see if they'll win effortlessly.

Take the punch to the face and worry about retaliating with one back to them. Do whatever it takes to win. Personally, I'm resilient to taunts in a video game because it's a minor thing. It can be very effective to certain people.

I welcome taunts because, it adds flavor. We're not carebears in a fight and I rather hear smack talk than silly drama threats and/or "I'm sorry for ringing out" stuff.
