I'm actually not 100% sure about this regarding myself, at least not romantically. I've had cravings for friends, physical comfort and intimacy before, but not a yearning for some kind of partner. Save for some week long pseudo bf/gf thing that happened when I was 10 because I couldn't bring myself to turn them down, I've been single my entire life, and I've been fine with that.
 
Hmm, for me works somewhat like this, I`ve never felt very welcomed, not even by the people I call friends, so it was really normal for me to feel lonely while a bunch of people were talking right there in front of me, at the same time I always tried to keep away, a gentle indifference, it keep you safe, then you meet someone, who makes you feel less lonely, not necessarily a love interest, as long as make you less lonely.
