When I say "modernity", I mean "evolution with respect", and religions sure lack respect... Religions are a plague to society, they kill liberty, and they don't get that if we are what we are, their "god" did it... Anyway, religions are just delusions, and a shelter for weak minded people (don't hate my for my opinion).
I could point out every flaw in the belief in a certain god, which I won't do here even if I'm already hating.

I believe religion has had its purpose in our evolution as a species. Religion imposes a certain family structure that people not stubborn enough to believe in, may starve or die off. So to put that in evolutionary terms, the stubborn religious types were more likely to be more successful. But now in a time where your family isn't in danger of starving, the stubborn trait still remains in a large amount of people. There is no reason for bigotry now, but it did serve humankind on some level at one place in time.

It will disappear with time. People will become less and less religious. I used to look down at religion. I still do in a lot of ways, but it doesn't bother me as much anymore.
