Soul Calibur VS discussion

Soul Calibur Vs Star Wars. :P

I always wanted to see Darth Vader face off against Yoda. [I could go on but ending sarcasm now]

As much as some / most of you guys would like Soul Calibur to stay completely clean and original, the eyes of the hardcore fighting game community already have their impressions about our game. Most of them troll it or don't bother to understand it. Now bear with me for a second, theoretically speaking, how would you feel if Soul Calibur Vs or X ____________ (blank space) was more successful than Marvel Vs. Capcom?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_game_franchises

I don't know how accurate this site is but here's what it says in a nutshell.

Soul Calibur franchise has sold an estimated 10 million copies. The Street Fighter Franchise is responsible for selling roughly 29 million copies in it's existence. The "Marvel" brand has been licensed to games that have been sold around 29 million. Final Fantasy alone has sold 79 million copies of its franchise. Not to mention the rest of Square Enix games.

So, wouldn't it seem logical for sales, for reputation, for community interest, to let Project Soul make a Final Fantasy or Square Enix vs. Soul Calibur game?

This was brought up before. "Why don't they just make a Square Enix fighting game then?" They don't know how to make fighting games. http://na.square-enix.com/dissidia/ (In my opinion, I'm not interested in this.)

Take Smash Brothers for instance. For the more hardcore type of fighting gamer, it seems a little bit of a joke right? Simple concept, lacking in a bit of depth right? Well you can't ignore how friggin' popular the game is because it has 3 of the top 10 selling franchises housed in it.

Still saying no? Why not?

This is exactly what we are talking about. We absolutely above all do NOT want to sacrifice better gameplay and the reputation of our beloved game for some better sales figures that would come in if we just added some stupid anime characters. Namco tried that with Link before and nearly every person that came to the game for Link was retarded. As you can see, they made tons of money with that, but the quality of the game was in many people's eyes reduced. What we want is less emphasis on the fluff, not more.

Brawl lacking depth/a joke? Sure. Melee? Hell no.

And Landslide, Soul Calibur is not a game make with love like many other fighters. It is almost completely a cash cow. Its been passed around too much in development and nobody has a sense of ownership(IMO.) So it's going to need stupid stuff to attract the sales to warrant its creation. But crossover characters are not something that necessarily sacrifices anything other than aesthetics.

Soul Calibur 2 was a great game, with or without Link. He was like the toy in the Happy Meal. Yes that was fluffy I agree. However, Marvel Vs. Capcom is not a fluffy game which still gets tournament play on its Dreamcast port. Street Fighter X Tekken and Vice Versa, will not be fluffy games. Guest characters are fluffy but cross overs are not. Both franchises are committed to the same intellectual property. They aren't just going to put out a terribad game.

I think turning away a new potential audience because you don't want to be bothered with "retarded" people is completely selfish and "retarded" itself. Super Street Fighter 4 has a huge following and a great hardcore committed community. As popular as it is, what we see competitively is a small percentage of a much bigger community. I'm sure the percentage of "retarded" players in that group is larger than this community.

I never said sacrifice gameplay either. Link was an exception due to his characters gimmicks. Darth Vader, the Apprentice, and all the guest characters that were re-skinned as other fighters didn't sacrifice gameplay. (Yoda exception) You have to agree with me on that.
