Melee definitely has more viable characters, so is your problem with the execution requirements(hence complaining about wavedash which just adds more tools to the game and therefor makes it less stale since characters can acheive more at any given time?)
To be honest, Melee's movepools and what they do are boring to me because most of them, at least in the competitive sense, start with WAVEDASHHERPDERP followed by a designated kill move. I'm not a fan of that style, so Brawl is the better choice. (I will admit that I'm not perfect, because I L-canceled and all that other crap when playing Melee.)
And unpredictability in a game is the enemy of competition. You want skill and cleverness to win a match not unpredictability and chance.
See, there's your misunderstanding, that I enjoy "competitive" play. I don't. Call me casual, whatever, but I dropped out of competative Smash Bros. play a long time ago because of what the community had turned my fun brawler into. Skill and cleverness are fine, but wouldn't it show that you're more skilled and cleverer than most if you, you know, adapted to that unpredictability instead of shun it altogether?
I don't know your acronyms.
