Roundtable: The Year of Fighting Games

Tekken BORROWED from VF? That's new to me, last I check VF5 bit all kinds of shit from tekken (non-canned oki damage, crumple stuns, similar tech system, same jumping and while landing mechanics). WTF is Tekken borrowing from VF?

The fact that VF5 borrowed a LOT from Tekken is proof, IMO, of the quality Tekken has reached.

But Tekken did borrow stuff from VF. Don't forget that VF was the first to do juggles; high, mid, low move properties, "on the ground" attacking, and provide characters with multiple throws. Essentially, VF also introduced the "parry" (remember when Akira's parry used to be G, ub/b/db/d+p?).

I'm also pretty sure that jumping and while landing mechanics was from VF first though (I've been playing both VF and Tekken since VF1 and Tekken 1, so I'm getting old and my memory is a bit fuzzy).

However, my point here really is that the whole situation is really very similar with GG and SF. GG has 2-in-1's that SF invented (or stumbled upon by accident). GG has a high-jump air combo, which, if my memory serves me correctly, was first seen in MvC.

But that doesn't mean that GG isn't a great game. Nor is SF better or worse than GG. GG can't be compared to SF though, because even if they have similarities, the overall play feel is totally different; just like how Tekken and Virtua are truly not the same game.

and for the record: T6:BR is a beast. There's a reason why it's been number 1 for what, over a year? In Japan's arcades. That's against comp from Gundam, BlazBlue, VF5:R, SF4, and loli games. In the rest of Asia (Korea, HK, Singapore), it's the same story. The reason is that the game is pure quality win.

This is the "year of fighting games" thread right?

Well, definitely is. You got Soul Calibur hitting it's stride in 09, and then you have SFIV hitting and just taking over big time. So many people dropped or cut down on other games to play SF4. Look at tournament numbers, it's crazy. Went to a "little" tourney in Toronto and there was like 57 players for SF4. THAT was "little" for a SF4 tourney. 57 in soul cal would be like a major.

Then all the talk and hype about Blazblue, it finally hits, and I really really enjoy this title. KoF XII hits, it's hit and miss for some people. I liked what I played with our group of players, just need to get some money to pick up the game.

Tekken 6 is on the horizon as well and I'm with Cha Cha on how well it's going to be recieved. So many fighters, I just don't have the time to try to focus on all of them. I gave up SF4 because I'm a spaz and can't get my inputs out like I'm supposed to. I mostly focus on BB and soul Cal even tho nobody plays that with me anymore. Could get KOF and try to get into that, or wait for T6. But I've never been able to effectively backdash in that game, making it more recreational for me rather than competitive. We'll see. I gave it all a go when T5 came out too.

But yeah, it's quite the year to be a fighting game fan.

I think the best fighting game to come out this year is KOFXII. I know I'm gonna be the only one though hahahahhaha

My mind's already been made of up as to my favorite fighter of 09.

BlazBlue gets it easily. While I do like SCIV, SFIV, and KoFXII, BlazBlue is the most fun I've had with a fighter out of all the recent releases. I know damn well Tekken won't change my mind (I'll still play it though). I only play Tekken because it looks cool and T6 does look cool.
