Anyone here like 2D shooters? R-Type Dimensions came out today...I've only played Super R-Type on the SNES (yes I know, I shoulda played RT3), which apparently was a blend of R-Type 1 and 2. R-Type Dimensions is basically both the first and second R-Type games with graphical enhancements. It totals 1200 MS points, or 600 per game if you look at it that way.
3D looks pretty good to me, and you can still discern what's safe and unsafe. You can even switch back and forth from 2D and 3D on the fly. There are 4 filters to play with, I personally like 'Retro 2.0 8-Bit'.
Comparing the 'port' accuracy, I guess the graphics and sound are spot on. Maybe you'll want to play your own music if you can't stand those older tunes. There are a few of game play differences though. One being that checkpoints have been added, so no more getting shot back to the beginning of the stage when dying at the boss, but no more suiciding at the end of stage 7 of RT1 to get your score up (well you can still suicide for score but the ideal point might be different). Also, I don't think there's a loop since you can stage select in the Classic Mode, could be wrong though.
There's also Infinite Mode, where you have infinite lives and the screen continues scrolling when you die instead of sending you to a checkpoint. You can only lose if you quit halfway. I doubt this loops either. I guess it's good for attracting newer players, or just practicing/experimenting with different strategies.
Simultaneous co-op mode's in there too, local and online. Haven't tried online but I can't imagine it's lag free. Heh, I bet there's gonna be a double-play vid in the near future.
People at the Shmups forum are reporting a few quirks, like jerky controls, weird collision with the force pod, etc. One of the major ones is no button remapping...lame! Although I'm comfortable with the controls. Auto-fire is stupid though, the shots come out slower compared to manual fire.
No downloadable replays like Ikaruga XBLA either, although the scoring strategies for R-Type is pretty much kill everything in sight and some boss milking. Still has the standard leaderboards for 1 and 2 player, Classic and Infinite mode.
All in all, fun shmups but 1200 may seem a bit steep, play the demo if you have concerns!
