PSN DOWN WTF?!1

I thought the fact that people get traced by IP for their illegal activities, be it downloading pirated stuff or even child pornography is very common across the world.

Warui_ne - Sony already reached settlement with Geohot. He agreed that he will not resume hacking PS3 nor any other Sony's devices.

Thing is Ring, in no way is visiting his websites Illegal. Shit I myself have been on his blog and YouTube page before because I admired the fact that at 17 he was the first person to jail-break the Iphone. Even downloading his stuff isn't illegal. Actually his method of jail-breaking the PS3 is said to be very un-friendly regarding Piracy because he is against it himself.

Yeah, I know that visiting his website wasn't illegal. I was referring to the statement that no one should be able to monitor our web browsing. I actually wonder myself how they managed to convince the judge to get persmission to collect the IPs.

Seems like the is no easy solution to this. Protecting privacy will make people feel safe behind the screen and piracy (And worse) will go on forever, at the same time, monitoring our every move on the internet seems just as bad.

So it's finally confirmed ;)

The good cause being piracy? Because we all know if will eventually lead to it. We shouldn't support piracy because it hits mostly developers and in the end, the players. All this being due to lesser software sales. This will definitely not benefit us in the long run =/
I think it is related to piracy. They want to protect people who were involved in a criminal activity. We all know that Sony won't sue any people who just browsed through GeoHot's website (millions of people), only the ones who were involved in jailbreak construction. Also, they aren't doing it against the law, the court gave Sony permission to collect the IPs.
the problem is that piracy will always exist though, and while i can understand wanting to protect against piracy, they have no right to infringe on our own rights to do so. while something like this COULD be used for piracy, not every individual is like that. should we disable a computer's ability to play games simply because someone creates a program/hack that allows them to download/run/crack video games that they pirated? should streaming video players become illegal simply because you can upload copyrighted video to them? why should we lose access to things that are there to enrich our lives simply because they CAN be used for doing illegal things.

the thing is you cant just try to control/monitor a persons activity like that. its like for someone to say "yea you live in a country that has freedom of speech. you can say anything you like" and then adding on a condition like "if you say something i don't like, you will be imprisoned or persecuted for your beliefs."

trying to stop something like piracy through force, monitoring and limiting certain features of a product will never work. there needs to be a middle ground that convinces consumers to legally purchase their content, something more persuasive and less of a threat. im not too terribly good at getting across what im trying to say here, but hopefully you understand. threatening people and taking away features only makes them lash out, only makes them angry, and only persists to make the problem worse. in turn by fighting piracy so hard the way sony does, they're actually giving piracy the spotlight, which in turn simply steers people in a direction that informs them about piracy and on how to do it. of course there will also always be honest individuals who will pay for their products. is there a solution to things? yes, but i cant tell you what that is. piracy is inevitable, all you can do is simply try to reduce the amount of piracy that happens, and this isnt the way to do it.
