PSN DOWN WTF?!1

In other news Ford announced that it will prosecute any owner found customising their vehicle.
Unapproved hotrodding and body kits being the most serious crime, Ford has stated that it will even be going as far as seeking court orders to reveal the personal details of anyone who has been browsing auto meet-ups or purchased a pair of furry dice.
u c wat i did thar.

lol

I think it is related to piracy. They want to protect people who were involved in a criminal activity. We all know that Sony won't sue any people who just browsed through GeoHot's website (millions of people), only the ones who were involved in jailbreak construction. Also, they aren't doing it against the law, the court gave Sony permission to collect the IPs.

again, it is a privacy thing, not piracy. really, only americans could be affected. the way our court system here works is that they always go by previous precedents. if sony is able to get a court order to obtain IP addresses, then other media companies will likely be able to do the same from sites like isohunt.com and thepiratebay. in a way this does loop back to piracy, but not directly.

there is also a very real threat that if they succeed, sony will bring legal action against people they trace by IP. the idea is that no private company should ever be able to monitor our web browsing, or gain access to records of it. it opens the doorway to specifically targeted advertising, embarrassing exposures of public figure heads and many other things that are violations of our privacy rights.

it bothers me that everyone thinks it is all about sony not wanting us to play burned games. it is a first and fourth amendment issue. anon is acting to protect our rights. they are not concerned with linux or ISOs or PSN or any of that shit. they are concerned with corporations gaining access to and ability to search our browsing history.

another problem with sony suing, is geohotz(dude who cracked the ps3) also got sued by apple when he cracked the Iphone. They tried to get the IPs of everyone who jail broke it. apple lost the case...IDK it seems like they are ignoring the previous precedent, imo no way will sony win the case

Not only is Lobo right but also its also a matter of ownership. To what extent is a product you buy strictly your own, to do with it as you desire. The PS3 originally came with the ability to run foreign code in it. Much like a computer. So much so that Sony advertised this ability when it first came out. They later updated the PS3 to block many such a features, which brings out the question who is Sony to tell me what I can or can-not do with a product that I buy?. If Microsoft would have told me I cant run Ubuntu on my PC I would have told them to fuck off in the same fashion.

That being said I don't think they tackled this the right way. They are bringing a lot of negative light on themselves by hurting 70+ million PSN subscribers out there as opposed to just corporate Sony.

They do have my support for the most part. Specially regarding the acquisition of IP addresses of the people who visited GeoHotz's website, Youtube and Myspace which is absolutely ridiculous.
