anybody can have business owning a console regardless of who they are, what they do or what they play. if it meant the difference between playing online and buying a game, for somebody on a tight budget, or for a kid on an allowance, i can see reason why they would own a console and not afford $5 a month.
Someone on a tight budget should do something(schooling, investing in something) so they aren't on such a tight budget or simply save their money if their budget is truly that tight. They might even have to sacrifice some other non-vital service that they use[television, home phone(since they would most likely have a cell phone), or some other thing I'm forgetting right now]. As for the kid with an allowance, they can simply save their allowance. They don't have an excuse. Kids with allowances don't have anything they need to use money to maintain so why can't they just save their money?
if they're on a tight budget, they likely cant afford to spend money on investments. they will be saving for a rainy day. just because they are on a tight budget doesnt mean they arent educated either - my family background proves that. very intelligent people with uni degrees and diplomas, but piss poor financial luck and hardship. kids with money, as i said may choose to save for games, and may not be saving for that $5 a month fee. not all child gamers play CoD, for example.
money does not determine your right to use a piece of hardware you already bought. dont make the mistake of thinking that, because you dont want to know where that road leads.
Point being if you can't afford the services you want, don't bother even buying the device for that service if you can't even afford it. Ever see someone with a car that they can't afford to put gas in? It just sits there, gets exposed to the elements, then they try to sell it for a quick buck losing more money than they gained in the end.
but you're not buying the device for that service. you're buying the device for the ability to play the games. most people when they buy a console only start with a small handful of games. people also may buy games for their singleplayer longevity so that they dont have to spend as much money on the hobby in the first place, hence eliminating their need to "buy gas". If they're selective about their purchases, they also save money that way. The service is really just another thing that is offered, but you can opt out. it isnt manditory. If you had no internet connection to begin with, but you bought a PS4 anyways, you also would not have to "buy gas".
on a side note they are perfectly capable of still playing offline at least. im fine with that.
The average person just gets a console to play CoD with their friends. If they can't afford online they won't have any fun with the console, it would lead to my point above, and they would sell it for a quick buck.
alot of people i've known, get a console to play a few select things they want, like final fantasy, ect. alot of casual gamers play CoD, but not every casual gamer. the casual who likes RPG's and platformers still very much exists.
