For the hardcore side, it's best to find 1-3 character(s) that fits your every need for now. One(s) you're comfortable with. One(s) you like most. Once you do that, it's best to seek out the Soul Arenas of your preferred character(s), hit some people who play that character(s), and fight it out to learn from each other. Preferably, I'd pick one character and become solid in that one before moving on.
I will forewarn you that the hardcore side isn't as pretty as CAS side, but it's a ton of fun.
Still, I won't hold it against you if you prefer playing dress-up. I'm probably one of the few whose conceited to play hardcore and do CAS back to back >3
