I've been afraid to step into the Bleach pool just because of how popular it is, and that it'll break my heart and leave me unemployed with 3 kids the way Naruto did. Can anyone drop me a good summary of anything that makes Bleach different from your run-of-the-mill high-action shounen anime?

Kenpachi is the world's biggest badass. Period. Other than that, it's pretty typical. Bleach has always been my favorite anime, but lately it's been so boring. The anime randomly cuts into a filler arc smack-dab in the middle of another arc, and the manga has broken down into nothing more than a random series of fights. The thing that used to make Bleach cool was the cool fights juxtaposed with interesting back story and (somewhat) creative plots. Now, it seems like we just randomly have fights between a main character and an unoriginal villain who ends up getting killed. Maybe it would be more interesting if the villains didn't die?

There are a lot of English VAs I like. Crispin Freeman is amazing:

How come there's no anime sub form on 8wayrun.com?

BTW, to all the Shana fans: I just got past the engulfed love siblings ark......... Creepy.

I guess I'll throw out the anime I've really liked...

  • Cowboy Bebop (classic, the anime for people who don't even like anime)
  • RahXephon (music/mythology based plot + great mecha battles + even better characterization + amazing Studio Bones animation = win)
  • Fullmetal Alchemist (another character- and plot-driven anime with a unique premise to boot)
  • Samurai Champloo (same genius as Bebop but with feudal Japan and hip-hop)
  • Dennou Coil (interesting take on a cyberspace-obsessed future)
  • Gundam (considering how many series there are in Mobile Suit Gundam, there's bound to be at least one that you really like... personal favorite: 08th MS Team)
  • FLCL (Gainax's animation tour de force + the pillows. 'nuff said.)
  • Azumanga Daioh (still the best crack anime out there... or maybe I just like it because this is all we talked about that one summer in high school when everyone was taking world history...)

I liked Bleach as a manga a lot initially (bet you couldn't guess that from my avatar, hmmm?). It really was reminiscent of Yu Yu Hakusho (a series which I loved growing up) and it played around with shonen stereotypes and was just a fun series with some badass battles and monster designs. Then it got epic in the SS arc... Now? Not so much. Too many characters and a story I just can't get into right now. =/
