Well to add to the discussion, Le Bello is not techincally correct, Il Bello (that's an i and a L by the way), because Il is "the" in Italian and Le is French for "the". Bello is correct though for handsome/beautiful.

I was working on the understanding that "le" is used when talking about several specific members of a group or organisation. In Dampierre's instance, he's essentially referring to himself as the beautiful one of his group.
