NEW UK ENTRANT!

Bellinzona77

[01] Neophyte
Firstly, hi to everyone in the community.

I'm here transitioning from 2D fighters to the 3D world and like the unique look and flow of SCV...so far to the point that I am very interested in making this my main game.

I've not played the series before, so know i have some transitioning to do, but from watching some streams of the top players it looks like competition is fierce and the game varied and fun.

As a new player I have a few questions I'd appreciate feedback on:

- With the transition I want to make from SF4 to SCV, what tips would people give about learning the game?

- Secondly, would plaing SCIV be helpful in the next few weeks as a warm up and intro to general mechanics of the series, combo flow, movement, attack and defence basics? Or is the new game too different to make this worthwhile?

- what other resources aside from this site are there for aspiring new players to learn as much as they can about the upcoming game and series in general?

Thanks in advance and look forward to mixing it with people here on the forums and of course with the game.

Pocky Yoshi says hello and is pleased to meet you. I'll try to answer the questions the best way I can. Though beware they're just my humble opinion.

-The only smart thing I can say is........Pocky Yoshi is no expert at SF4 lol. All he knows is its more strict on combos than SCIV imho....

-I don't see why you shouldn't play SCIV to get a feel of how Soul Calibur works. It's generally easier to play once you get the basics and all down. But if you feel SCIV is a waste of time, it's okay to start anew in SCV. Whatever floats your boat, comrade.

-I don't know any other resources aside from the Caliburforums(which is basically dead), but I humbly and proudly say that this site has what you need. Need hardcore stuff to get better? We got it. Need to get all fashion happy with CAS and story crazed? We also have it. Need to get artsy? We have people that pride themselves on that. Feel like that this site is a facebook? Well......Pocky Yoshi would sheepishly like to say we have that too. Tee-hee!

The only warning Pocky Yoshi will leave with you with is beware of what may appear a jerk to you. I'm sure you already know this, but its inevitable that you'll run into a few. But I strongly suggest you shrug them off and focus on being you.

Anyways, I hope I helped......though Pocky Yoshi awaits a well-versed person who knows more of SF4. However if you need anything, feel free to ask more through this thread or PMs with people you feel comfortable with.

Hello there new guy. The name is Mamoru, and if you need help on anything let me know. Since you have questions perhaps I can help.

-The soul calibur series as a whole is successful at something that no other fighter has down: being both casual and hard core. The only thing you need to know about transitioning from the second dimension to the third is just that, the 3rd dimension that is not present in other fighting games such as sf or Blaz Blue. Once you break out of certain habits, this will become easy for such a transition.

-Yes and no. 4 has a slower system than 5 does. However, the over all mechanic is very similar from each iteration. If you feel it needed then go for it. However, I personally feel that 5 is very different in execution compared to 4. If anything, 3 would probably be closer.

-What I did before coming to this site (which was not that long ago) was just simply learning from various videos on youtube and other sites of the like (for combos, matches and strategies by simply watching each fight). If you mean the series beyond the core combat, then I would say look up each bit of info you can. That one is entirely up to you.

My bit of advice is similar to Ol 3rd person speaking Pocky-yoshi: People are competitive, so tensions on certain subject matter can spike certain people's tempers really quickly. Be you, and also, be willing to understand each perspective.

I hope you enjoy 5 and any other games you wish to try. Keep an open mind, and I am sure you will come to be a huge fan of the series.

Welcome, and remember:
Fight well, Fight hard, Fight often!

Now this is a rare treat: not only a british player, but an FG vet - this pleases me greatly.

Let me introduce myself, I'm Syn, you can call me Josh if you prefer, anyways I'm one of the top British players and certainly the most active of them on this site (though I mostly just troll the boards at the moment, lol). First of all, SCV is looking very differant to SCIV, to the point where many long standing Soul Calibur fundamentals can almost be challenged, but that is certainly no reason not to start as early as you can. I would defenitely recommend at least familiarising yourself and playing as much SCIV as you can before release.

Now let me cover the basics and the first thing you will need to know coming from Street Fighter is that on SCIV, our online system is worse... much worse, where a 'perfect' connection is a 5 frame minimum latency. Now as a player, I have nothing but disdain for using online, but I do concede it is a good training tool, though your fundamentals are essential to be learned offline as online can give you a very wrong impression of these fundamentals.

Next, picking a character - who have you taken an interest in?

Whereabouts in the country do you live? There are players dotted all around the country and I can help you find them, offline experience in my mind is absolutely paramount in becoming a better player, so finding a sparring partner at or above your level is important.

Finally, there is an SCV release party in London on February the 4th, details of which can be found here. All the best players among others in the country will most likely be in attendance (as will I) alongside a couple of players you may have heard of: Kayane and Ryan Hart. I hope you can make it.

Now, I'm a TO in the midlands, but another player on this site you should hook up with is Age_Of_Truth - if you're in the London area, this is the go to guy to get involved in the scene on 8way.

Any more specific questions you have, shoot. Either in this thread or to me as a PM. Welcome to 8wayrun.

=)

Firstly, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome, words of encouragement...and also words of warning - trust me the SF4 community has lots of great people in it, but makes you thick skinned as a player at the same time!

I got myself a copy of IV at the weekend to get me used to the series base mechanics - I think it will help for sure. V on the whole seems to have postive feedback in comparison to IV and based on my initial impressions of IV that makes me a happy gamer - game flows really well and looks great!

A few other general points about me I should have mentioned. I am not entirely alien to SC, but I'm talking back on the PS1, when the extent of my play was vs the CPU mashing on buttons as Mitsurugi! I also played MK9 pretty intensively over a 3-4 month period so block buttons, hi, mid and low hits with some similarities in combo flow are fimiliar also.

Character interest so far extends to the following protaganonists:

- Raphael (current most likely main). I like his speed and movement, his feints are cool and I think he could have potential as a gaurd crush beast in V. Having seen Raphael in V, lots of his moves seem to have transitioned from IV, so the practice will not be wasted on IV for a few weeks either.
- Astorath...always liked "big body" grappler types in games.
- Viola - she just looks really innovative, but I also fear she will be played by "lots" of people and might be one of the more complex characters to start with.
- Cervantes - Pirate with 2 swords, one with a gun as the hilt...what is there not to like!
- Tira - I like the mood change stuff as a stance change, but think she might be one for later in my development.
- Z.W.E. I - The summon wolf thing looks very interesting and the mix up could be very fun.
- Xiba - Kilik seems pretty cool in IV, so I can imagine some similarity design wise.

@ Synraii on UK stuff.

I will be at the 4th Feb event. I know of Ryan and Kayane from SF4 (although she has always been SC first as far as I am aware). I'm also going to Fire-Bugs arcade on the evening of the 3rd for the release offline session. I saw these on Neoempire and confirmed with a guy called One-Night-Stand on there...maybe the same guy as Age-of-truth? I go by Tamanapants on there, but that's a name I picked a few years back that I'll retire with my involvement with SF4...I have reached saturation point with that game...despite a few years of good times and solid competition I want something fresh.

I live in Chelmsford, so London is the most likely place for get togethers for me and I'm also happy to hold sessions at mine.

Given my advanced years :-), I see this as one of the last openings I have to really play at a good level with a game before life genuinely provides priorities that mean gaming becomes very much a now and then hobby. Father spare time however is shinning brightly on me with home decoration complete and no immediate projects on the cards so I intend on making the most of it.

Thanks again.
