New to fighting games

Just bought SCV and got a fighting stick after wanting to get into fighting games. I get bodied so hard by B level AI playing Pyrrha lol.

What I usually do when I play is try and do a combo/button mash, then block and repeat the process. Everything feels so random and unpredictable :(

Any tips for a player trying to learn fighting games?

Keep in mind that the AI is kind cheating. It knows exactly what you're pressing and uses some stateful stuff to hit you.

For example, you'll sometimes notice you'll get hit while still in the block animation. Really, you're being hit the exact instant you release guard. Computer mix-ups are deadly as they know exactly (low? nope, they're low guarding - launcher!) what you're doing and execute everything in milliseconds.

The best thing to do is stay safe and try to punish them. The AI will eventually go for wild swings so it doesn't become a throw contest/guard standoff.

Forgive me if I don't understand how familiar you are with the game but I will point out, button mashing won't get ya that far :D. Things will start to feel less random and unpredictable the more you play and get a feel for the game, your character and your opponent's moveset. There will come a time you will duck a high on reaction and find yourself amazed that you knew that it was coming. You will probably eat a mid because you were so amazed you forgot to punish the high, but the time will come when even that will be second nature to you. The masters of any game are beautiful to see. Just stick with it and consult the gurus for your character if you need any really sage advice but for now just concentrate on gaining some experience.

As for basic advice? Hitting the training mode and getting your favorite character's moveset down by heart is a good start to gaining a little more control. Things will naturally seem less random if you know what does what or what buttons you press to counter a specific threat. If you can't answer when I ask you what's your character's 11A (look at your keyboard's number pad) then you have some practicing to do. Learn the ranges of your attacks or which moves you have that punish stepping. Someone who quicksteps is normally a free lunch for those moves. And don't mash. It will only help you continue to feel lost. Only do the moves you mean to do.

If as you play you find you don't like your old main as much as a new character then that's okay. The brightside is you now have a lot more insight as to how to fight your old main.

Might I ask who your main is? If you have a favorite yet?

If you are playing on Xbox maybe we can play together. I'm at the exact same stage, just learning the moves set and some combos.
