New to competitive SC; Need help chosing a character.

Hi I'm trying to get into competitive SC with SCII HD. I wanted to ask which character's in this game are considered versatile and good at whiff punishment or punishment in general as well as having solid close - mid range tools? I want a character that is balanced and can transition between offense and defense well. I don't mind if the character leans more toward aggression.
 
Hey glad to see you take an interest. From what you are saying I would suggest maybe using one of the sisters. Sophi or Cass. Although Mitsu is a good solid character and easy to get started off with but I can't really say he excels in punishing. He's more of a 50/50 character. Of course you can't go wrong with X (Xianghua). She really is the best in the game and EVERYONE needs a pocket X. Lol! I hope someone who is better at elaborating will come in and explain it out in more detail but yeah from what you are asking for you can't go wrong with Sophie or Cass.
 
Hey there! Always nice to have people join that have interest. I found Yunsung to be relatively easy to use, once you learn his stances. Talim is a lot of fun too and she has a good move set that is easy to pick up. Kilik is also another good one that I've played myself and he is a good solid character to learn.
@GreatOne1939 also had some good suggestions too. Cassandra is one of my favorites and she is in my opinion, one of the best along with Sophitia. One is a tad bit more difficult to use than the other but I could be wrong. But hope that helps you out.

If you're looking for a good close-mid ranged character, Cassandra or Sophitia are probably your best choices (excluding Xianghua, but we need less of them players ;) ).

If you decide to get into Cassandra don't hesitate to come into her SCII HD Online Soul Arena when the game drops, I'll be ensuring that it will be a treasure trove of information on her (I'm her moderator).
