Money Dilemna: Wise in the Long-Run?

TL;DR: Should I refund my discounted FF XIII + XIII-2 delivery ($43) and get the SCV strategy guide/my money back?

So I have known since the day Final Fantasy XIII came out in Japan that not a lot of Japanese gamers were thrilled with it, it having proved so unpopular that 2 weeks later it could be had for ~$20 ($5?) in the bargain bins there. When the game came out overseas, a number of these overseas fans also shared their disdain for this game.

Now, long ago, I played through 6 hours of it and found it "decent" and perhaps worth a buy. I have a sister who eagerly wants to play [recent, graphics-whoring] FF games so I downloaded the XIII-2 demo and I actually enjoyed it and could see myself playing it for good hours.
Then I found a limited time deal on Amazon Canada where you buy XIII-2 now ($40 CAD) and you get XIII FREE with it. It also offers (not mandatory) free shipping. What a steal! So I buy it due to the earlier-mentioned motives. But maybe I bought it too soon because I'm feeling Buyer's Remorse after having read informed reviews about XIII after the fact that I confirmed my order.

I strongly agree with the author about many points as to why this game is terrible, because I have come to know what I like in my RPGs: open environment in which you can explore and search for things... treasure and information that supplement the game but are optional; strong, likeable characters; great presentation and execution of story. The general consensus is that these are attributes that don't describe FF XIII.

I might be falling into a psychological trap of denial here, telling myself that "I'm different from the majority of gamers, and once well-acquainted with the game's engine, I can find enjoyment in it." But am I kidding myself?

The order arrived today (that was QUICK; 2 days on FREE, non-express shipping). My nagging thought though, is that the money should be spent on the SCV strategy guide as it is comprehensive, in-depth, and because of its content I know I will get my money's worth. Now, many of you may be saying, "Look at what you're saying! Refund that order NOW!", and that is the utilitarian thing to do. But since I got this game for such an amazing discount and it's already in my hands, and I will one day play it in the future, should I keep these games? What I want to know basically is: is this game such a piece of turd that any money spent on it is a waste? Maybe I already know what to do, but I just need a bit more confirmation.

PS: For those interested, this is the review that got me feeling that Buyer's Remorse the most: Final Fantasy XIII: The World Is Square Tube

last time i played FF13, i was running upward through this tube, as i had been for the past 5 hours, while pausing occasionally to mash x. then, i had an epiphany.

i had no clue wtf was going on because all i did was run and mash x. i didn't know, connect to, or like any of the characters at all. my characters were not customized at all. i had no options for exploration...not that there was anything compelling to explore anyway.

i tried, a couple days later, to return it for some credit at gamestop, at which point they offered me something like $4 and showed me the stack of used copies behind the counter. i humbly accepted their gracious offer.

it wasn't just bad. it was so bad that i would never even consider giving FF13-2 a shot. if you can sell them for more than $20, do it. do it now while you still can.

I've given up my hopes on Final Fantasy games, and I'm definitely not the only one. They're not really THAT bad, but they don't meet to the industry standard anymore.

I hate Final Fantasy.

The SCV strategy guide is nice and has some good information.... if you read it cover to cover. If you're only looking for frame data for your character, check the Soul Arenas and Wiki here. They should be more accurate and up to date with the latest news.

Unless you play Yoshimitsu. The last I checked, I don't think they even had the correct moves listed on the Wiki and nearly no frame data.....
