Looking for New RPGs to Play!

I assume you're talking about more modern, recently released RPGs, in that case... pickings are kind of slim.

Mass Effect 1 is short, with some awful and poorly balanced shooter aspects. Mass Effect 2 greatly improves on the gameplay, particularly the combat/shooter mechanics, but its even shorter than the original if you're just plowing through the story.

Dragon Age 1 and 2 are pretty lousy in terms of both gameplay and general story vibe. The game feels overly generic and despite difficult, somewhat grey-ish choices and dialog that you're presented with and given, they ultimately have very little impact on the overall story. Dragon Age 2 - like Mass Effect 2 - greatly refines the combat mechanics, though they're ultimately very boring MMO style combat mechanics, so you may or may not like them, depending on your preferences. The story in DA2 is terrible, with the main PC coming as a very Mary-Sue character.

Tales of Vesperia came out in 2008. It's a pretty solid Xbox 360 title and really refines a lot of the time-worn mechanics from the Tales series and has a lot of great fighter elements in its deep combat engine. It's notable Tales game in that it is the last Tales game we've gotten in the US and it has no voice cuts. Worth checking out if you haven't already.

NIS, Aksys, Compile Heart, or Idea Factory games are somewhat common, though hard to find right now. I wouldn't recommend a few of them. Neptunia is trite, broken, and pandering; same with the Record of the Agarest War games. Atelier Rorona isn't bad - being from Gust - and worth a look into, despite being really simple. I don't particularly care about Ar Tonelico Qoga, though some seem to enjoy it. Keep in mind it's game that's heavy on the pandering despite some well-to-do ideas for game play systems. Disgaea 4 is coming out in about 2 weeks, and that's definitely worth a look as it attempts to try and capture the feel and magic of the original Disgaea.

Beyond that, there's Valkyria Chronicles - definitely worth a buy. There's also Resonance of Fate, which is a great game that anyone who likes RPGs should try. Although the story may not fill any cravings, its still a solid serving. For handheld RPGs, there's Persona 3 Portable, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (ditch the other LoH games and go straight to this one). Ys 7, Ys 3: Oath in Felghana and Radiant Historia are all very solid games. Dragon Quest 6 is good, Dragon Quest 9 is decent (as a long time DQ fan, I can't quite say I enjoyed DQ9 as much as other titles). Dissidia 012: DuoDecim is great, contains the entire cast from the first game plus its story and a brand new story and characters. Definitely worth it. There's also Golden Sun: Dark Dawn which is worth checking out for its pure simplicity and very back to basics story.

To sum it up, handheld RPGs are the way to go right now. There's a few console ones that are good buys too. Here's my list to try...

Recommend:
Valkyria Chronicles
Resonance of Fate
Ys 3: Oath in Felghana
Ys 7
Dissidia 012: Duodecim
Dragon Quest 6
Persona 3 Portable
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Disgaea 4
Tales of Vesperia
Radiant Historia

Worth a look:
Mass Effect 1 and 2
Atelier Rorona
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Lost Odysessy
Magna Carta 2

Avoid:
Dragon Age 1 and 2
Hyperdimension Neptunia
Record of the Agarest War
Record of the Agarest War Zero
Trinity Universe

I highly reccomend Valkyria Chronicles for PS3. Its possibly one of my top 10 games and its just SO FUCKING GOOD. Also, I would suggest White Knight Chronicles...but only if you can take a small portion of Japanese stereotypes and Dragonball Z voice actors

Oh, btw, screw Dark Dawn, go old school with Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Best little fellas you'll ever play. Though, good luck finding one since GBA games are considered ancient and classic now, and getting one on eBay will probably cost you a fortune.
