KSOD on Windows Vista... Again.

Here's the thing. My dad's computer (a Toshiba Satellite laptop) runs on Windows Vista. Starting this morning, I get a black screen with a mouse pointer and absolutely nothing else -AFTER- I log in. I can hit ctrl+alt+delete and run explorer; and it works fine until I turn it off. Then it does it again after login. I tried regedit>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>...>Winlogon>Shell, then change path to "explorer.exe" (the popular solution). Didn't work.

Any ideas?

Appears Windows wants to work, but something is glitching out at the Kernel or User-space driver level. I would start with a boot into Safe Mode and see if the problem persists. Are you familiar with the F8 boot menu?

Your first potential culprit to check are bad video settings (or a bad video driver).

I don't remember Vista too well, but the F8 boot menu should also have a VGA mode option, to strip down what graphics drivers are loading.

Share your results if you're still having a problem and I'll try to help.

I did try different options in the F8 menu, but not VGA. Damn, that should have been my first try lol.

I'll see how it does.
